lots of curiosities, jail house was a little weird. quaint town feeling. spend an hour or a day, there is plenty to look at.
It's got a treasure trove of artifacts illustrating the town's early mining and rail history. Museum staff are friendly and helpful. Definitely worth a visit when in the Rock Springs area.
The museum is housed in the old town hall where the police and fire departments where once based. It has a frank record of it's history on display.
Very interesting town museum in old city hall. Great pictures. References! along with the library it is a really good documentation of the city. The Sweetwater county museum in Green river also has great resources Worth a visit to the historic downtown area. Helpful staff too.
The Rock Springs Historical Museum is housed in a magnificently restored building originally constructed in 1894. The exhibits are well-curated, the printed explanations are easy to read and everything appears to be displayed in subject/date order. The old jail cells inside the museum are fascinating. This historical museum is a true gem and well worth an hour or two of your vacation time. There is no admission fee. However, donations are always appreciated. And from the looks of things, the donations are used to directly enhance the museum's exhibits.
It's free to get in and that makes it tremendous value, with multiple sections, covering the old jail cells, criminals (Butch Cassidy etc), militaria, costumes, and coal mining.Well worth a visit !
The downtown museum is nice--it provides an overview of the folks who worked the railroads, dug the coal, herded the sheep, and created the town. Rock Springs was settled by immigrants from around the world in the 19th century: In the 1920 census, over half of RS residents spoke a language other than English as their first language, thus the town's nickname of "City of 56 Nationalities." The museum is located in a building constructed in the 1880s. It's a grand structure, built to stand the test of time and the winds of Wyoming. And TripAdvisor is missing an attraction that you should visit after the museum--the Fine Arts Center on "C" Street, just a block or so away. The Center is small and intimate, but possesses an impressive array of paintings--there's a Grandma Moses painting, a Norman Rockwell, and many paintings related to Rock Springs, WY, and the west, collected over many years by an art-loving local teacher. There are exhibitions and events such as readings and musical presentations too. Admission is free. The Center is attached to the downtown library, which is a nice place to browse books and read periodicals.
