There is an obvious amount of effort and care taken in this museum. Thermopolis values its history very highly, and the exhibits assembled showcase that pride in the kind of delightful fashion only small museums can capture. There is a surprising amount of objects and a wealth of information behind every piece. The issues I have with the museum are the issue typical of small town museums. There are a lot of artifacts in a relatively small space, signs are a little too dense with information, and the entire space could use a renovation. But I don't hold these against the museum too much. It is still a great museum with a lot to offer, and the historical ambition makes up for the congested space. If you spend a day in Thermopolis and find time on your hands, this is a great place to visit.
When the high light of this museum is a bar what message does this send to your kids.? Every small town in America has a museum just like this one poor lighting and dungeon like atmosphere .. The building looks like it is ready to fall down.
Not worth the money. Me and my family will never go back again. The people there not so friendly more on the rude. Next time I drive to the cody museum which is 100% better.
Dropped into this treat of a museum between lunch and an afternoon appointment. Like many museums we have visited in Wyoming we were bowled over by the love and pride the people working there had in the museum. The showpiece exhibit is the bar from the Hole in the Wall bar but there is much more, including a traditional Wyoming schoolhouse, farm and mining equipment and a carriage from Yellowstone. What started as a half hour time filler turned into a full afternoon of discovery about life in Wyoming.
They have an eclectic collection so there is something for everyone. They have a bench in the basement you can sit on to rest. Expect two hours to see everything and military get in free!
We had a very good time here. Was interesting to see more history. Stop in and enjoy the hospitality. Was well worth the stop.
We found this place by accident as we were in town for one nite. What a treasure! A must see! Loved the Hole-In-The-Wall bar, a Yellowstone Carriage, many Wyoming historical items. The man who volunteered in running the place was a well of information. This is a must see!!!!
This museum is an understated gem! It should be the Wyoming state museum! It was huge-we didn't have time to see it all. Very kind people working there. I would absolutely recommend it.

I am surprised the previous reviewer says this is a small museum. OK it is not a big city museum but for a small to middle size city/town, it is amazing. Two large floors of very well displayed and documented material with dioramas, collections fullsized displays, make it arguably the best museum of its type I have ever been in. There is even an outdoor collection of interest period machinery including buildings. There is some incredible history in this area and the museum has captured it all even up to the present. If my wrong, I'll refund your money. Please read Jynie-Lynxie below for some good thoughts on how to enjoy.
If you are in the neighborhood it is a nice place to visit, but it is not a destination in itself. The boardwalk is nice and a dip in the pool also, but overall it won't take more than 1 hour.
a great way to spend a rainy afternoon - full of interesting artifacts and history the displays of arrrow heads alone was worth the admission
I loved this museum so much! The Indian music in the basement was a little annoying, but the artifacts were intresting. It had all these little 'rooms' set up to look like what they would look like in the olden days. No interactive things. Little ones should not go, because they would be tempted to touch. Very cool museum overall though.
I love the recreations within of various business such as a post office, a bank, a jail, and different rooms of a typical house in the 1800s Wyoming.Bought a cookbook called "Chuck Wagon Cookbook." Will try some of the recipes and report back.
They crammed a lot of stuff into this museum. Look close, otherwise you will miss something. It is a great museum to learn about the area.
