Loved the historical setting as well as free-running antelope. Geese were numerous. Power to the missileer.
Warren AFB started out as an Army Cavalry post. Many of the homes and buildings are still present and in very good condition. I enjoyed my time there visiting, looking around and watching the elk. Just a warning, make sure your military ID is in good shape so they can scan it.
Enjoyed seeing and reading about F. E. Warren AFB's long history. Started out as an Army post in 1867 to protect the railroad. Originally called Fort D. A. Russell until 1930. A large herd of Pronghorn sheep (antelope) call the base home. They were all over the parade field. Many historical buildings too.
As retired military this was my first time staying at the lodging on base. It is excellent and reasonably priced. We didn't take advantage of other facilities
Stopped at Warren AFB on my way to Montana. The lodging here is wonderful. Only drawback is you need to be affiliated with the military in some way. I'm a retired Colonel and have been located on many bases throughout the world. This is one of the most pleasant. This used to be an Army base before becoming an Air Force Base. The buildings are in the same style as Fort Leavenworth and Fort Sam Houston which are among the oldest bases in the nation. Warren has a unique history in that is was first established as a way point for the pioneers heading west. It was the last Calvary post (Calvary with horses not APC's and Bradley's). They have their own antelope herd that graze on the parade grounds. Anyone into history would thoroughly enjoy this place.
My son is stationed here at FE Warren, and I stayed in the base housing for family and visitors when i came to visit him. What a beautiful area. Very peaceful and the wildlife walking around added to the ambiance of the base. Although the buidings are very old, the small 2 bedroom apt I stayed in was wonderful. Had everything I needed and was very very clean. I loved staying on base closer to my son, and got very lucky that I was given an apt in the building right next to his dorm building. I would absolutely recommend anyone coming to see an airman stay on base, so much better than what you would get paying those high prices of a hotel. Loved my experience here and cannot wait to visit again.
This air base feels like it's definitely in the wide-open west! There's so much space and with the antelope milling about all over, it's really interesting to see the wildlife. We saw antelope, geese, and jackrabbits hanging around everywhere. It's a very pretty and historic base and on our next visit, we plan to visit the museum on base.
I was fortunate to get to live here for a couple of years while my step father was based here.It is a beautiful base and full of many good memories for me.I lived in the officers house on the end of Randell Ave.next door to Gen. Pershing's house.Such beautiful historical homes.
This is an amazing base but most will not be able to visit. Warren Air Force Base is home to to a herd of 250 Pronghorn Antelope. They have the run of the base. They are wild but are quite use to people taking pictures. It was such a joy to watch them close up. We went to yellowstone an antelope island but watched from quite a distance. When I was at the base exchange there were no shirts with antelope on them or any stuffed animals. It was such a treat to see these wild beautiful animals.
My wife and I are regulars at WAFB. As retired military, we have access to all of the support facilities. Warren is a special Air Force Base, one without a flight line and with immaculately maintained Civil War (and earlier) buildings. The exterior of the historical buildings and parade grounds are kept to the same appearance as old photos show them to have been. The interior of the buildings are modernized and provide 20th and 21st century creature comforts. The base is a special place to visit and during Frontier Days, the base is open to the public for one weekend. If you are in Cheyenne at any other time, you probably will not have a problem meeting someone who is either active duty, or retired military (Cheyenne has a large retired military population) and they will probably be more than happy to escort you onto the base. Don't forget to visit the base's excellent museum!
Having served at this base for 4 years as a missile cop for the 790th msfs response force section this base is consider a historical landmark. Famous people such as Sammy Davis Jr and Neil Diamond all lived at FE Warren. In July during Frontier Days--the World largest outdoor rodeo allows places like Fort D Russell to open their gates to see the transition of military life on the soil on FE Warren.
The Air Force Inns (Visiting Airman's Quarters) here was beautiful. The base has that gorgeous Wyoming plains feel with some Pine trees. You stay in old brick buildings with hardwood floors. The buildings are protected historical buildings and very rustic. If you have base privileges, I recommend staying here.
This is one of the prettiest bases I've seen. There were a lot of geese and antelope. It was just an amazing sight. If you're in town and have base access, check it out!
Really nice attraction if you have a military ID. There is lots to do here, fun things too. There is a Bowling Alley, this place called Fall Hall which includes Laser Tag, Video Games, Pool, Air Hockey, Batting Cages, Rock Climbing, Dance Rooms, and free computers if you want to use those... There is a Movie Theater (an old but OK) and there are homes to buy if looking for a home (they are older homes from like the late 1800's). Go ahead and try this attraction out, with lots to do.
If you have an ID card and are authorized to stay in lodging this is a great place. Just be ware, not shooting the prong horn antelope. They were walking down the street. What a wonderful sight.
