There is usually wildlife to be viewed in Hayden Valley. Summer wildlife can be bountiful and the animals can be seen from the car.
Lamar and Hayden valleys are the places for wildlife. You just watch for stopped cars to know where to find them. And luckily there is alot to stop for. Eagles, chipmunks, buffalo, some parts elk. We were most thrilled by Wolves but saw out of naturalists who shared their telescopes with us. We did not see bears on this trip but did go to the west entrance to a animal reserve/animal rescue and saw the biggest bears in the world. Kodiaks and upclose wolves totally worth the trip, but it on the list of things to do. Don't say I didn't warn ya.
Imagine this: you're driving along the Hayden Valley, and there in the distance a big, blobby, brown object seems to move. You get your binoculars, and there it is A GRIZZLY BEAR...in February. Playing with a log, rolling on the snow, crossing a river, crossing the road, digging a day bed, taking a nap. I could have watched this creature for hours but there are more treasures along the road...like a red fox hunting for mice, and coyotes on the prowl, trumpeter swans napping along the river and Canadian geese floatiing around. A great place to be visited and revered for its natural treasures.
We snowmobiled through the Hayden Valley as part of the "Trail of the Wolf" tour in February 2015. I can't think of enough superlatives for the raw beauty of this valley. There was a huge expanse of unspoiled snow covering the valley and the entire place was one of the most gorgeous places I've ever seen. In fact, as we were snowmobiling through the valley I was thinking it is one of the top 5 places I've been (along with Hawaii and Alaska) for sheer natural beauty. We saw a grizzly (really!) just before entering the valley - confirmed by the ranger - and snowmobiled through a herd of buffalo in the road. I suspect springtime would bring lots of wildlife. When we come back this makes the list of must sees in the park.
Hayden Valley and Lamar Valley are the top two places to go to the see the wildlife. We did see a lot of bison and a even a calf. In addition, we also seen a coyote and a fox while we were in this area. In addition, to the wildlife the scenery is fabulous.
The Hayden Valley is in the heart of Yellowstone with the east gate giving you the nearest access. It's 7 miles wide and 7 miles long and was once filled with water from an arm of the Yellowstone river. Glacial till from 13,000 years ago and river sediments created a marshy environment today which has little tree encroachment. Bison, elk and moose can often be seen in this wide open environment from any of the many scenic panoramic turnouts. Unfortunately the bison often cross or congregate on the road creating huge traffic tie ups. There are two accessible hiking trails, the Hayden Valley trail and Mary Mountain trail. Traveling on either of these trails may get you a run with a bear, fox or coyote. Wolf packs are rare in this area. With many bodies of water birds are plentiful. Ducks, Canadian geese and pelicans can be seen on the Yellowstone river and it's tributaries. At LeHardy rapids which has a boardwalk alongside the river, beavers and otters can be viewed, During the spawning season cutthroat trout can be seen jumping the rapids .Pelican Valley is located 3 miles east of Fishing Bridge and can be accessed via the Pelican Valley trail. The trail is 6.8 miles round trip (4-5 hrs) it's easy to moderate and is open land surrounded by forest. Bring bear spray on this trail which is closed for part of the year. Of course, sunrise and sunset are the best times to get a glimpse of rare wildlife while bison elk and moose are plentiful anytime of the day. In the early morning dew evaporates off the cool earth and produces an ethereal and otherworldly atmosphere which is great for photos. Aside from the wildlife there are turnouts for Mud Volcano, Mud Geyser, Sulfur Calderon and Black Dragon Caldron which are all nearby and worth a stop.
We have seen the Canyon Pack of wolves on two separate trips through Hayden Valley. The road between Fishing Bridge and Canyon Village follows the Yellowstone River for 16 miles through beautiful Hayden Valley. Wildlife is guaranteed. Enjoy.
We seen an overwhelming amount of bison in Hayden Valley, but we all so see a bear, two cubs and antelope in the fields
Saw wolves and grizzlies. Pays to get up at sunrise as you almost have the place to yourself. Awesome!
Haven't seen any wildlife in the park? Then make your way over to Hayden Valley and bring binoculars. This is THE place to see Bison and other wildlife coming out to find food.
This is a beautiful valley with the Yellowstone River running through it. There is a nice picnic area at buffalo ford and plenty of opportunities to view animals. 50 years ago there were few buffalo, now they are everywhere. You may also see bears, so watch the other side of the river too.
Each time we drove through here -- going to and from Yellowstone Lake accommodations -- there were lots of bison. They were crossing the road, walking in front of buses, running to the river. It was great!
this is the place to go to see the wolves. Early in the morning or late in the day is best. There are usually several people with telescopes and some share so you can see them. All of Yellowstone is wonderful but this is a special place.
