Located at the perimeter of Cerrillos Hills State Park, the Broken Saddle has access to 38 miles of trails for beginner to advanced riders. The herd, all gaited for the best trail riding experience, are well-groomed and well-trained for all types of riders. Harold, the owner, is an expert horseman and places the safety of his riders and horses first. I took a fantastic two-hour ride through Cerrillos Hills, Harold providing me interesting tidbits about the area (once mined for silver) and surrounding cities along the way. For advanced riders, there are plenty of opportunities in the dried stream beds to speed up, and don't forget to bring your small cameras for photos at the overlook! Broken Saddle is located about 40 min. from downtown Santa Fe and 60 min. from downtown Albuquerque. If you are returning to Albuquerque, take Harold's advice and follow Hwy 14 S between the Ortiz and Sandia Mountains.
Broken Saddle was perfect in every aspect. From Harold's instructions, to Rod's guiding and local history, to the horses. They were great with our special-needs member, taking it all in stride but with extra assistance when necessary. The trail through the low hills and the scenery makes for a wonderful experience.
It was an over the top, wonderful experience to be outside on a picture perfect January day atop well trained horses with folks who were friends by the time we made the first curve in the trail. Our guide told us all about the horses, the history of the area as well as all the plants and animals who share the land. You will have the same terrific experience whether this is your first ride or your 100th. We walked, trotted and cantered and had trouble keeping the goofy smiles off our faces for the next 2 days. Can't wait to go again.
The owner, Harold and his assistant Rod are the perfect hosts. The stables and horses are clean and well kept. The ride was great and the scenery was gorgeous.
The view was scenic, the horses were well cared for, the trainers were knowledgable and friendly, and the terrain made for an excellent ride. We were searching for things to do while passing through Santa Fe and heard that this was the place to go. The owner, Harold, was actually the one who ended up guiding us on the trail, and his apprentice was very passionate about the horses. This was a great little gem to find while on our honeymoon. It ended up just being the two of us on the trail and once we were comfortable we were able to canter and gallop a bit with the horses. It was extremely fun and the horses were very sweet, well trained, and sure-footed. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a great ride. If we find ourselves in Santa Fe again, we will definitely make the 30 minute drive out to Cerrillos again to hang out with Harold and the horses.
Worth every Penny. My husband is an inexperienced rider and after ten minutes of instruction from Harold, he was riding with confidence. Harold was very knowledgeable about the history and plants in the area. The horses were in great condition and a pleasure to ride. This was the highlight of my trip to Santa Fe.
Took a 2 hour ride on Thanksgiving Day while visiting my mom in Santa Fe. Great views, great guide, all-around wonderful experience. Will definitely do again when in town.
Horseback riding near Santa Fe and Albuquerque,We were looking for a riding place to go during our vacation. We could not have asked for a more superb place than Broken Saddles riding stables, located in Los Cerrillos . We were able to book over the phone from Minnesota with ease. Once getting there, Harold and his team exemplified customer service. They had the horses ready to go, went over safety, ensured we felt comfortable, and off we went. Not only did we get and excellent horseback riding trip, we were informed about the history of the surrounding area including the mining history and the flora/fauna as well. They offer rides for beginners up to experienced; we chose the experienced rider ride and were able to cantor, gallop, as well as walk through the state park. We have been on many rides and this was by far the best experience we have had; the horses, guides, and Harold himself make this an exceptional experience you do not want to pass up. Above all we cannot stress enough how amazing Harold and his team are. We unfortunately locked out rental car keys in the trunk of the car along with ALL our personal items. Harold used his AAA card and called on behalf of us and waited while the AAA person came. He offered us jackets as it was cooling off fast, stuck around until the AAA person came, allowed us to use his phone to call various people we needed to contact for information. On top of that when AAA could not open the car he brought us 20 minutes away to the nearest general store, where we could wait for our ride, and explained to the people working our plight. This was not only an amazing experience to horseback ride with excellent guides and horses, but the customer service was beyond exceptional. From now on I will only ever ride with Broken Saddles and strongly urge anyone in the area or visiting to go!
If you're planning a trip to the Santa Fe area, put Broken Saddle at the top of your list! Harold runs an amazing operation. He assesses the ability of each rider, gives great instructions & takes the time to answer questions. Then you are off to explore the beautiful hills & trails with a knowledgable wrangler. It didn't take long for us novices to feel completely at ease in the saddle. The experience was the highlight of our trip to Santa Fe. It's obvious that the horses are well cared for...that's particularly important to me. Do yourself a favor and book early in your stay because my guess is you'll want to take multiple rides while in this beautiful part of the country! Enjoy
We had a destination family wedding to New Mexico and wanted our families to get a chance to experience the "wild west" on horseback. Broken Saddle accommodated our 17 person group with 4 Wranglers, and even my 86 year old grandmother was able to ride that day! The staff there took wonderful care of all of us, and made sure everyone was comfortable given their riding experience (or lack there of). They talked us through everything we needed to know for the adventure. I would highly recommend a group ride with your family or friends...A perfect, fun addition to your trip!
We had so much fun! I was very nervous because I've only been on horses a couple of times. Harold gave great instructions before and throughout the ride. It was only a few minutes before I felt completely comfortable and was having a wonderful time! The scenery was gorgeous, the horses were so easy to ride and Harold was a pleasure. We would definitely recommend Broken Saddle, this experience was the highlight of the trip for both of us! Thanks again Harold.Tony and Carol
We always like to horseback ride whenever possible on vacation. We have probably taken 10-15 rides over the past 5 years. Broken Saddle is by far the best. We were able to trot, canter and gallop throughout the ride. Never have gotten to do that at any other place. The instructions given before the ride were outstanding. The horses were beautiful and the people there the best. If we want to ride again, we will take a trip to Santa Fe.......they are that good.
Our family of four booked a ride with Broken Saddle. As inexperienced riders, we were not sure what to expect. It was clear to me immediately that the owner cares about you as a rider, but also clearly cares about his horses. Harold, the owner, convinced my wife to ride and even loaned her some boots! Our two kids thought the ride was the best part of our trip. Rod was our guide and he was terrific as well and clearly a "real cowboy." We will make this part of our trip every time we return to the area.
I haven't been on a ride where they actually let you go fast vs walk a trail in years. They warned us about hats flying off and we know why now. Cantoring and galloping for a good portion of the day. Staff was super friendly, horses are great and it was an awesome time.Highly recommend..
Broken Saddle is the place to go riding! I have ridden in many states in the US and overseas and these folks are the best. A little over 2 hrs in the saddle , cantering and galloping over the hills, stopping to look at the awesome views and experiencing all that nature has to offer. The guides were very knowledgeable about the desert plants, the various old mines and they even stopped so we could take a picture of a leatherback terrantula. What a blast! The Tennessee Walker I rode was excellent.
