We thought that the highlight of this museum was speaking with the gentleman behind the counter. He clearly knew a lot about the history of the town and wanted to preserve its' heritage. We got lost on the way to the museum and drove through the abandoned plaza of the town, which is right behind the museum. This museum is well worth a visit. Kids will probably be bored.
Worth the trip from Sante Fe. About an hour northeast. This is a very spiritual place. Enjoyed touring this very tiny town.
The Chimayo museum is really great. A little museum with a big story to tell. It tells the history of the area and the folks who lived and died there. A great place to spend some time in.
This was our first visit to Chimayo and it was definately worth the drive. We stopped back by the winery and enjoyed the rest of the afternoon. Try the Holy Moly
This is an authentic effort by local people who care about preserving Chimayo's past for locals and tourists alike. It's not big or splashy but very humble like the inhabitants here.
The Chimayo museum does supply interesting insights into the history of this traditional New Mexican religious mecca. However the presentations are a bit crowded and, while the space is traditional, its cramped nature makes its historical revelations less than enjoyable.
This was a real eye opener for our childred 10 and 13. They were exposed to a different religion and culture. It was wonderful and they are still talking about it!
Annual pilgrimage to the church involves thousands trailing miles and miles on the highway. The town doesn't have much, but it's worth the day drive just to walk through the church, explore the grounds, and eat tasty local food.
Step back in time here. Read one of the books about this non-commercial plaza and museum, then go and marvel at it.
What a fun place to visit with all ages. Something to interest everyone.
We've been to Chimayo and the sanctuary many times and it is always a moving experience. Museum is interesting and part of the experience.
I was there during a non-tourist season, so it was peaceful and very enjoyable to stroll along the grounds
This little museum is a labor of love, offering a glimpse of what life was like for the Spanish colonists. Our family was most impressed, and our children remember what they learned there much better than in some of the more polished attractions elsewhere. With so many sites dedicated to the Native American presence in New Mexico, it is a treat to find an attraction that completes the picture with a focus on the important history of the Spanish New Mexican tradition. If you are looking for one of those authentic, hidden treasures to remember long after your vacation is done, seek this one out! It will enrich your whole New Mexico experience.
