Played this course twice in late Oct 2014. Course was in fabulous shape. Great greens. I had read that it was not walkable and my first round in a cart confirmed that position. However the next morning I played with three locals two of whom were walking. If you know the secret trails through the desert (and even the special tees for walkers on the 6th), you can walk. But you do need a guide and you'd better be in good shape.
We golf all over the country, both public & private, and this is one of the prettiest courses we've played! Well-designed, well-maintained. The clubhouse and carts aren't new or special, however the course is beautiful. Several people were walking the course, however it's VERY hilly and could be a challenge to walk with clubs. We will play it again if we pass through Farmington!
Beautiful layout, bluegrass fairways, some water holes. Target golf. Hone your putter skills, you will be challenged by the mult-tiered greens. Avoid weekend crowds; rounds can be as long as four hours plus. Try a tues or wed tee time for a better experience. Call ahead to be sure the course is not closed to the public due to the one of the many tournaments that are held at this course. Not a walker-friendly layout. Take a cart, you'll be glad you did. Nice little snackbar. I heard they approved beer sales. I'll have to go see if its true. see you there, maybe we'll get a little money game going.
Farmington is still steeped in the financial downturn. Lots of closed businesses and depressed people who could not care less about performing their jobs with any amount of pride. But this golf course is a must-play for the travelling golf enthusiast.
Affordable prices, unique terrain, and great views. I grew up in Farmington and have since played a few courses nationwide and some international. I still really enjoy playing this course whenever I am at home visiting. It is far superior to the Country Club or any others in the area. It was ranked top #5 in the nation for public courses for awhile when I was younger and remains a top course in New Mexico.
i'll admitt im not much of a golfer nor could i even get the ball off the put! but thankfully my little nephew who twice my heights knows everything and anything about golfing. i truly loved playing especially for a frist timer :) i wouldnt mind coming back nor playing again. loved every moment weather was nice that day!
Excellent, challenging golf course and facilities. Second time to Pinon Hills and it did not disappoint. Well designed course in excellent condition with good pricing booked on Golfnow.Good lunch in the grill, also.Need to have your "A" game here, especially with the undulating greens. Unfortunately, I only had my "A" game for a few holes before it disappeared. Despite the lousy score, still worth the ride !
This is the only course I've played in New Mexico, but based on my golf experience in 13 other states, I'd say it's well above average for municipal courses nationwide. For the hot, dry conditions, it's well kept, and most holes offer scenic views of the surrounding mountainous terrain. Bring your camera! (Just don't hold up the group behind you, okay?)The layout is great, and the wind conditions and elevation changes keep the fairways surprisingly narrow. You can be on the tee and not feel any breeze, you'll hit a good shot, and then watch it get swept into the rough - or worse - by the winds aloft. I'm not used to desert golf and usually rely on the trees to give me an idea of the wind. No such luck here. And remember, the high altitude will send your ball flying farther. Between that and the wind, I wound up flying the green on the 167-yard par 3 fourth with a 5 iron and then a 6 iron, too, finally hitting it pin-high with a 7 iron. Nowhere else am I able to hit a 7 iron that long, wind or no wind.I'm very glad I stopped to play Pinon Hills. And their twilight rate, which includes a cart, is an absolute steal. If you're in the Farmington area, there's no good reason for you not to stop. Nice course!
I have played Pinon Hills on several occasions over the years and enjoyed it but a recent golf outing has changed that. Before teeing off we went into Grill on the Hill to grab something to drink and eat. The absolute rudeness of the lady working was unbelievable. She made it known that it was an inconvenience that we asked a question and then placed an order. Also, watching her handle our food and petting a dog without washing her hands was a little much. But trying not to let that ruin our day we headed out on the course. Things got worse. For 17 holes there was a group of 6 golfers 2 groups in front of us that refused to let anyone play through despite the gap in front of them. I don't mind if a course allows a group bigger than a foursome to go out but they should at least use common golf course etiquette and allow faster groups to play through. This was not a weekend round and having to wait 5-10 minutes between shots certainly ruined the round. Apparently the "good old boys" feel like they own the course and do not want others to support the golf course.
Pinon Hills continues to be a wonderful play to play golf - and a superb value, too. Its somewhat remote location is a blessing and a curse: great for Four Corners area golfers, but not easy for outsiders to get to on their way to some place else. Hold on, i guess that second part is still a blessing for us locals! Fine shot values, very good conditioning, Dye-abolically undulating greens, desert punishment for wayward shots. #2 on my NM list, behind only Black Mesa.
Pinon Hills is an excellent course for the money. You will be hard pressed to find a better course for the dollar. I have played many overpriced courses and couldn't help but think, "I'd rather play Pinon Hills." The Grill On The Hill is a good place to grab a burger or sandwich. It's worth the trip if you love golf and can appreciate a great value.
This golf course is located in NW New Mexico at Farmington. It is an 18-hiole, par 72 course. It was constructed and opened in 1989. For many years, it was rated as the #5 municipal golf course in New Mexico. It is over 7200 yards from the pro tees. Every hole has at least 5 tee boxes that change daily. Many holes have 6-10 tee boxes that challenge every playing ability. Tee prices are very reasonable, ranging from $30-$40, cart included. I live in Farmington and have played this course since its beginning and every day is another challenge. You will love this course.
While my wife was on a painting trip to Santa Fe, I played golf at Pinon Hills 3 days. Easy to get on as a solo golfer. Great golf course and very reasonable ( about $30 for 18 holes).Don't miss the pinon burger - a great example of a genuine New Mexico green chile burger.Visited about 2004.
All the important elements of the best NM private courses in a slightly condensed and affordable venue. Rated #4 best municipal course in the USA by Golf Week Magazine and easily lives up to the designation.
I live in Southern California, and this would be a $200 or more golf course at home. The layout is incredible, the course is in great condition, and I would recommend it to anyone passing even remotely close to the area.
