The girl there was sarcastic and uninterested in anything but her biker friend who had shown up. I was trying to buy a special flute (called triple: chanter, bass, and drone), but nothing I could say or ask could possibly be right, and she repeatedly insulted me until I just gave up and left.

If you are visiting the White Sands, this is worth the drive. First of all, you will pass through entirely different ecosystems on the drive up US 82, which is worth it right there. 82 east of Alamogordo is simply one of the most stunning drives in America, and no matter how many times I travel that road, I never fail to see something new and wondrous. The Tunnel Stop is about halfway between Alamo and Cloudcroft, and more than any other shop in this part of the state, it really reflects all that is so wonderful about southern New Mexico. Not only is local art available for sale, but Sue has made the Tunnel Stop into a nexus for local artists. It draws creative people together for the love of creating, not for competition or a quick buck. Spend some time at the Tunnel Stop. Have a drink (there is Carrizozo cherry cider!) and walk to the back. There is a breathtaking view where you can take in nature, handspun fibers, unique wood furniture, flutes, photography, and painting. The jewelry is authentic and fairly priced. If you want to read about the area, there are lots of books to choose from. If you want typical and kitschy, head east a short distance and the Apple Barn will meet that need (and nothing against the Apple Barn; it's lovely!). But if you really want to feed your senses, spend some time at the Tunnel Stop. It's one of those places that you will want to visit more than once just because it makes you feel so good!

By far the best place my wife and I stopped at. We were met with warm and genuine smiles by Sue and Walter and made to feel like we were friends. They have everything from local art to Native American flute lessons. A MUST stop!!!!!
