We were taken here during a tour that started at the Bradbury Museum in Los Alamos. The view was wonderful and we enjoyed the tour very much.
If you are not a climber, the park is big and has a great view. If you are a climber, look up climbs in White Rock Canyon. Many great climbs can be accessed by dropping into the canyon around Overlook Park.
We noticed the overlook sign when leaving Bandelier National Park and turned in to check it out. They views are pretty impressive. It's a beautiful overlook of the Rio Grande valley with the mountains in the background. It's a short drive through a residential area and nothing really but the overlook but what a view... There is a paved walk to the overlook and it is very close to the parking lot. Accessible to anyone.
If we have visitors to Los Alamos and don't have time to take them to Bandelier, a trip to the Overlook in White Rock is what we do. The platform at Overlook Point overlooking the Rio Grande is accessible to handicapped visitors. The view of the Rio Grande far below and then out to Black Mesa and the Sangre de Cristos is amazing. It is also may be a little frightening. Some people are glad to have the railing between them and the abyss. There are also playing fields and restroom facilities closer to the park entrance
I will never know this place if my local friend did not mention. Have a look at attached photo which was taken from easily accessible overlook which is in a residential part of Los Alamos. Los Alamos is just 1 hour drive from Santa Fe. Scenic highway is as beautiful as anywhere else in NM, including Taos high road.
Been here twice love the view waterfalls, black Mesa. Last time millipedes everywhere. Nice clean area. Parking easy access for all mobility types. Breezy
Unlike anywhere else. Highly accessible, yet gives you access to spectacular vistas of open wilderness. Hard to believe it is so close to crowed Santa Fe. Lots of interesting hiking and scrambling opportunities for the kids and grownups alike -- or just stick to the paved trail and observation deck. And... it's all free, courtesy of Los Alamos County.
Definitely worth going out of the way to see. Truly amazing views. You have to drive thru a residential neighborhood to get there.
You can see the river and mountain view from 4 different point within the city of White Rock. There are also hikes that joint each of the viewing points or you can drive to each one.
We drove right by this on the way to Bandelier National Monument but returned when it was recommended by the staff at the White Rock Visitor Center. This was a great call! The views are simply spectacular and more than worth the slight detour. You will be glad you stopped!
We were heading to the Bandelier National Monument when we spotted the signage for the Overlook - so glad we stopped. Small parking lot and a viewing platform which gives views out across the mountains and the Rio Grande river gorge below. There are some hiking trails here too, though we were not geared for that, but instead got out our trusty camping chairs and enjoyed our lunch at this spot. Note, this is just an overlook, so there are no restrooms or vendors etc.
About one mile (less than 5 minute drive) from the White Rock Visitor Center, location for the shuttle bus to Bandelier National Monument, is the White Rock Canyon Overlook Park. To get to the overlook point, drive past the sports fields and keep going past the parking lot until you see a sign for the overlook. There, you will find a smaller parking lot, and then an iron viewing platform behind it. On one side you can see the Rio Grande snaking its way through a gently sloping valley. On the other, more dramatic side, you can see the river curl by a large mesa in front of you, framed by another mesa off in the distance to the left, and dramatic mountains on the horizon in the distance. At times, due to the elevation, you can even see snow on the mountains. This spot is well worth taking the 15 minutes or so out of your way from your trip to Bandelier. As others have pointed out, you can hike from the park down into the valley as well. The valley floor is some 1,000 feet below you, so you may want to avoid this spot if you are afraid of heights. There are a few decent hiking trails around the area, including a nice one within Bandelier Park as well, so if hiking is your thing, you have a couple of options to consider.Feel free to reach out to me with any questions. - The Gentleman Backpacker
when we were there, we had perfect weather and amazing visibility, coz it rained for 4 days straight, for 3-4 hours every day. so everything was clean and we could see for miles. the little balcony view is wonderfull.
About an easy hour drive from Santa Fe is a beautiful scenic vista which overlooks canyons and the rio grande river. It is at the end of a neighborhood development and fully paved drive
Go here if you want to see large expanses of this most beautiful part of New Mexico! Not far from Los Alamos, and a beautiful drive along the way! (Try going both ways in and out of Los Alamos (main highway and 4 Truck Route!)
