The Loop, as it is commonly referred to, is a 14 mile Forest Service road that begins in Tajique and ends in Torreon. The road begins in pinyon/juniper forest, and ascends up through pine forests, and peaks at fir/spruce forests. It's a great road to bike or just go for a cruise, but if you plan on driving the entire loop, I would recommend an all terrain vehicle. There are also several established campsites along the route, with many of the campsites having pick-nick tables and restrooms. There are also several trail heads throughout, which offer a great opportunity to hike up to the crest of the Manzanos. Unlike the heavily used Sandia trails, many of the trails of the Manzanos are scarcely used, so if you want solitude, this is a good place to hike. Fall is my favorite season to drive the loop, because there are a few stands of oak and aspen trees that change into vibrant reds and yellows. Depending on the time of day you go, you may be able to see some of the local wildlife, including black bear, mule deer, and wild turkey.
