Local art as well as special travelling exhibits. The film giving the background of local murals was excellent. Nice lay out, going from rooms was easy. Written descriptions of displays gave good information.
Not bad for a natural history museum in the SW. Dinosaurs do dominate, but give me a break on the evolution indoctrination. Birds of Paradise exhibit was quite nice touch.
We visit Albuquerque every year, and every year this museum is on our list. My kids love it! Helpful staff, demonstrations, exhibits up to date, and pretty nice gift shop. We even like the little snack bar - great sandwiches! Nice place to go on a hot day...
You have seen one old bone, you have seen them all. Nothing very notable really. They try to bring in cool stuff, and example... they had the Titanic display in 2013. Its all in how you want to spend your afternoon. You probably have old bones in your museums there.
I am a paleontologist and have been to the country's best museums-sometimes "backstage" where some of the coolest stuff is hidden away. I only stopped here because I was walking to Old Town and passed by it. Figured I would stop in and see what they had. A chunk from the Ghost Ranch bone bed, a T-Rex jaw in a case at eye level so you could see it up close, the skull of the worlds oldest mammal, a chunk of the KT boundary, and some great trackways are just a sampling of the great stuff this little museum has to offer. There is a special exhibit going on right now on birds of paradise-really interesting mix of history and modern science with two ornithologists showcased. Videos and photographs of what are some of the coolest birds the world has to offer IMO. If you like natural history museums then you have to stop here.
I just returned from this museum with my two boys ages 3 and 6 and was very impressed with everything! We spent a full 2 hours there and that was moving very quickly through everything. Both my boys were engaged the whole time, with new interesting things to see and learn around every corner. The room with live animals of all kinds was great for us. The employee's happily spoke to my kids with patience and kindness. They answered their questions and encouraged more thinking and exploring. Every exhibit was wonderful and we all learned new things. The museum was clean, well taken care of and the staff was amazing. Any time i can go to a new place and my children come home wanting to investigate further about things they heard, read or saw is a good place in my book.
I'm a retired science educator and have seen most of the biggest natural history and science museums in the US and Britain (Smithsonian, American in NYC, Field in Chicago, etc). These are all great museums. But NMMNH&S, overall, may be the best. Yes, the other museums may have more skeletons of dinosaurs or better dioramas of wild animals or better exhibits of tribal life in Africa, etc. But this one touches the most important bases and does so at a consistently high level. Also, I think they do a better job of putting facts into context so there is better understanding of how astrophysics, geology, and biochemistry fit together. And their explanations are clear and relatively simple. Also, with hundreds of exhibits most museums have a fair number out of service at any given time. There were very few exhibits out of service here. And the exhibits were uniformly up to date with a few minor exceptions. Also, unlike many museums, it was easy to follow the intended sequence of exhibits without a lot of backtracking. And the docents were very friendly and knowledgeable. We were there several years ago and were able to stay only two hours so I wanted to come back. We stayed five hours this time and still didn't have time to see all we wanted to. I usually mercilessly inflict these museums on my poor wife far beyond most human endurance. No so this time. She was as fatigued as I but wanted to see more!Perhaps that fact that New Mexico has so much of the story of life and geology on this planet right in their back yard has an impact on how well they tell the story in their state museum. In the interest of full disclosure, this is a STATE museum so you're not going to see a lot of anthropology of central Africa. But if you want to see that sort if thing go to New Mexico's international museum of art and culture in Santa Fe!It's great for children too. With or without kids, don't miss it!!!
This is a gem of a museum. Great dinosaur exhibits. They do not shy away from explaining global climate change. All the exhibits are clearly explained with signs or other helpful media.
The museum, has exhibits, education, science, Dyna Theater, Planetarium, a great value. Adults, 13-59 ($7.00), Seniors 60+ ($6.00), and children 3-12 ($4.00). Come and learn about the Earth, the Solar System, and the Universe, though out billions of years.Check out the Web site for the different shows and events. The museum has a store, restaurant, and restrooms. near by other sites to see:****Albuquerque Museum of Art and History*****Old Town Albuquerque This is a good value, excellent exhibits, well maintained, clean, etc. Trip with my Mother to New Mexico, May 2012, no children category below
This is a good place to see the ancient history of NM. They even have a lab where you ca nwatch and ask question as the scientists unmask the fossils.
I've been to the natural history museum several times and have never been disappointed. Before my son was born we would go for adult night and when there was a special exhibit we were interested in. Now that my son is here (10 months old) it's a whole new level of fun. He loves the volcano exhibit!
my family (all adults) and I enjoyed a half day visit. it was a Monday holiday and we saw plenty of happy families. There were also plenty of helpful staff/docents. I especially enjoyed the dinosaurs, the live animals to view, the IMAX Jerusalem movie, and the Birds of Paradise. Oh yeah, the volcano room was fun and interactive. and easy to fit this in on a visit to Old Town for an entire great day.
Lots of things to see. Dinosaurs and interactive displays. Clean and would take a lot of time to see everything.
This venue is very kid-friendly with many interactive displays. An adult could spend hours here reading all the information. It is spacious with plenty of room to see everything. The docents are very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful.
I would recommend this museum to people who love museums. It had a lot of information and very cool interactive displays. There was a lot to see and to top it off they have a planetarium which is very cool. We saw the "Dark Matter" show which was awesome but the host started off by showing us the Albuquerque sky tonight and humorously yet informatively took us through the constellations you will see tonight. This would be good for pretty much anyone looking for something fun to do...and YA, you can bring your kids who will get a kick out of the museum...just do the rest of us a favor and keep them under control so the rest of us can enjoy this very informative and well set up museum.
