We drove from Santa Fe to spend the day in Taos. Our first stop was this beautiful church. It sits on the main street into town but the front of the church doesn't face that street. You must drive down a side street to reach the parking in front of the mission. It is a lovely adobe church done in the traditional adobe with the straw quite visible. It is small but has lovely proportions which probably why it was the subject of so many artists' paintings and photographs - most famously by Georgia O'Keeffe. Inside the wooden pews are dark with no cushions. The murals on the wall are beautiful to see. There was a family having their baby boy baptized when we were there so we sat near the rear of the church to share in their joy. It made the whole visit so much more memorable. There is a small gift shop in an adjacent building where you can buy many different items related to St. Francis of Assisi. We loved this church and its architecture and history.

Before we went to Taos we saw this church in the work of Georgia O'Keeffe and Ansel Adams as well as others. It is a fascinating church - architecturally and historically. The inside is both beautiful and worshipful. This is an active and vibrant Catholic parish and the ladies at the church are very helpful with information about the church. They said it was a popular destination for tourists, pilgrims and artists. Additionally, the church possesses a painting - "The Shadow of the Cross" by Henry Ault. This is, to me, a spiritually significant painting and I recommend that any who visit the church take the time to view the painting (in a separate building for a $3 charge).

We enjoyed a visit to the church and felt very fortunate to bump into the parish priest who shared a great deal of history of Taos and the culture, along with the various groups of people attending the church. It was illuminating and worthwhile.

We were walking in Taos and literally stumbled upon this gem. It's an Adobe Mission built in 1813 and still an active church to this day! There is a portrait of Jesus on the Sea of Galilee, which we found interesting as we were just there a few months ago and looks like it was painted there and transported here as it's so authentic looking. Hard to imagine an artist painting it from memory. Anyhow, if in Taos it's a nice visit.

As one of the oldest Missions in New Mexico, this Rancho de Taos historic masterpiece must be seen. The Retablos inside are magnificent and don't forget to visit the famous "Shadow of the Cross" next door in the Church Office.

This was a place that we hadn't planned to visit (we didn't know about it) but the person at the visitor center just up the road from the church recommended we see it. And we're glad they made the recommendation. This is a great example of abobe mission architecture built ~1813 and still is an active church today.

I stopped off to see this easy-to-access historical site just south of Taos, and still within the greater Taos area. The woman at the visitor's center put in a video for me at the parish hall, so I learned about the history of the church, as well as the mystical portrait of Jesus on the Sea of Galilee. Nora was helpful, and then took me around to the church itself. You will be glad you stopped in.

We have seen just about every little church and big cathedral in the world! Each one is different and special. We stopped here on the way back to Taos from the Rio Grande Gorge. It is a cute little church made out of Adobe, and they remud it each June. There is a nice gift shop across the street where we bought a locally made Christmas ornament of the church.

This famous mission is well worth a visit for the beautiful adobe work. The water catchment systems are intriguing for an engineering buff and the beautiful carved doors will never disappoint. The area around the mission also has some beautiful adobe homes and some great little galleries and shops.

Even though there was a funeral happening when I arrived, it was worth my time to quietly and unobtrusively, I hoped, circle the church yard and make a few pictures of the walls and the light on the walls and the flowers. And then have lunch in the nearby restaurant and then visit the galleries across the parking lot. A lovely way to spend a few hours waiting for my room to be ready.

This is a beautiful adobe mission church. Unfortunately, the day we visited, the church was not open. Was told by a shop owner that the priest recently survived a heart attack and closed the church on Mondays and Tuesdays due to therapy. What a blessing to survive a heart attack! If you enjoy visiting historical mission churches, I don't think you will be disappointed. Beautiful.

Not really much to say other than its an impressive church. The outside walls are made with clay and grass and the inside has had an extension but for the most part it is true to character. The grounds are very minimal but a nice historic church to visit.

The church has substantial religious and artistic historical value. As it currently stands, there is not much to see.

It has a nice garden in front of church. The sky is always blue whenever I visit this church. It is so nice to have blue sky as the background of the church with photo.
