Walt Whitman left his mark on American Poetry and continues to touch the hearts and lives of many people. If you are a fan, this stop is a must. The grounds of the cemetery are beautiful with many old tombs and headstones to visit. If you are into old cemeteries, this is a great place to walk around. Mr. Whitman’s tomb is set into a hill and is a great place to sit and read some of his works. The cemetery is in the outskirts of town so you do not have to drive through the city. It sits across the street from the Our Lade of Lourdes Hospital. Your GPS will take you right there. As you pull into the cemetery you will want to go to your left and you will find his tomb in the front left corner. Don’t forget to bring some of Walt’s work with you.
A necessary stop for Walt Whitman fans. We went during Poetry Month and took turns reading poetry out loud and left him flowers. (Yea, I know. We're geeks.) The cemetery is beautiful and well worth walking about. The groundskeepers freaked the kids out a bit by sternly warning them to stay away from the edge of the lake (we were right there with them) and telling them about a little boy that recently drowned and they had to fish him out. I get that the keepers were twitchy about it but it did take a bit out of the enjoyment of our surroundings. It is right off of a main highway next to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital so there is no need to go through the city to get there.
as I didn't see it. But have to rate so I can post this. Arrived at 4:25 and the gate was being locked up (still 3 hours or more till dark) and man would not let us in. Good news is if you arrive early, you can drive in as you can not leave your vehicle on the street. Short, interesting, drive from Walt Whitman's home. High traffic area but we got thru ok, thank goodness for GPS. I was in the area for the USS New Jersey, hope I'm never in Camden again, so I'll never get to see the tomb or the house, which was closed on a recent Friday (answering machine).
This was neat to see since I had always read about W W . This whole place is very historic. do some back ground reading before visiting.
For any poetry buff this is a great place to visit almost a pilgrimage. City of Camden is frequently considered to be at the bottom of the list of touristy cities but this cemetery and the tomb make your effort worthwhile. Whitman's tomb will remind you the European tradition of beautiful tombs and this amazing cemetary has a few such impressive structures. It also allows you to observe several distinctive stiles of burial sites. It is a Camden equivalent of Campo Verano.
Not much to visit in Camden, NJ, but Whitman's grave is worth it for fans of the poet. Harleigh Cemetery has park-like setting and somewhat Victorian appeal. The Whitman vault is in a unique setting among old gnarled trees. The noted Haiku poet Nick Virgilio is buried nearby.
Just be careful in Camden- a lovely place to see. His house was in Camden too. Check out both for the full experience.
