this was very exciting. We enjoyed every minute. A great day out. Lots to see and do. Very educational.
Our boy scout troop participated in an educational workshop hosted by NJ Sea Grant Consortium. The program ran from 10 AM to 3 PM on a Saturday with a generous lunch break. Our host taught us about how Sandy Hook was formed, what types of plants and animals live there, and the importance/relevance of the bay/estuary and salt marshes to marine life. The scouts were provided with waders and got to fish in the bay with nets and plankton strainers. We got to look at the plankton, crabs, fishes, and other creatures at the lab building. We also learned about the importance of testing for disolved oxygen and salinity and the scouts got hands on experience working with lab equipment. If your school, scout or youth group would enjoy a day at the beach learning about oceans, marine science or related physical sciences, give NJ Sea Grant a call. Bring walking shoes, extra socks to change into and a camera. You'll have a great time.
