Went to the Zimmerli art museum with a small group of friends and found it fascinating! It's located on the Rutgers campus, quite close to the Gateway parking garage and train station. Metered parking on the street is for 2 hours max, which is about the amount of time you'll need.It is free to get into the museum. We had a tour of 2 of the galleries, led by a volunteer docent who was very knowledgable and gave us a great tour. We explored the American collection as well as the Soviet nonconformist art. The tour lasted an hour and it went by quickly. We stayed after the tour to explore other exhibits that hadn't been covered. If you are in the area looking for something to do, you must go to the Zimmerli. And if you aren't in the area, make a plan and go!
Less well known than its cousin in nearby Princeton, this Rutgers University art museum is a magnificent find for visitors. Large and beautifully laid out on two levels it contains a mix of historic Jersey-centered paintings, a first rate section on Soviet and post-Soviet Russian art, special international collections of poster art and works of Japanese art that showcase the university's long standing connections with that country. Interspersed throughout are modernistic sculptures - including some by George Segal - and assorted other materials. I've been back many times and I haven't exhausted the possibilities. You could spend several hours here and follow it up with a walk through the rejuvenated section of New Brunswick's downtown nearby.
Great facility, wonderful exhibits, very nice people work there, truly enjoyed myself each time I go, which is so many times I won't ramble on......just go ther, you'll love it too!
An unexpected gem on the Rutgers College Ave campus in New Brunswick. A surprisingly large museum with lots of wonderful permanent plus one-time exhibits. Price is right ($6, $5 for seniors) plus not at all crowded during the week. You can arrange torus for groups of 8 and they have docents on duty to respond to questions on Sundays. Spent only 2 hours there but viewed less than half of the exhibits.
The Zimmerli Art Museum is well worth visiting on a regular basis. Their permanent collection and their special exhibitions are excellent. They are presented in a manner that both educates and delights. Past exhibition examples range from a rare complete set of 12 Mary Cassat drypoints, to drawings, poems, nad newspaper clippings which were mounted on the wall of turn of the century Montmartre cabaret, to a exhibition of beautifully illustrated childen's books. They also have a childrens program. I feel very lucky to have a museum of this quality and accessability so close to where I live. Entrance fees are $6, $5 age 65 & older, free first Sunday of the month.
Went on 3/1/14. The first exhibit was called something like ---Portraits--. It was really good . Then we walked around looking at there regular exhibits. It is a very good museum on Russian artists but you don't need to be "into" that sort of art to enjoy the art works. Our favorite was the prisoner who made billboards for the Russians . Take the time to read his notes and sketches. My son (15yrs) and I were there for roughly 3 1/2 hrs. The price of $6 per person is well worth it .
