Back in time and time to reflect. We had the opportunity to get inside - Thank you very much :) It is not big or rich, not that is not the purpose either !
This Meeting House and graveyard are a trip in time. These grounds are very quiet and peaceful . To the left of parking lot is a trail, great for walking dogs on a leash. You can walk all the way to Institue For Advanced study. The meeting house is original , and visit Stocktons' grave. Read the headstones!!
Take a ride down Mercer St., passing the battle monument to Quakerbridge Road. it's a bit of a tangle to take a left turn just before the bridge, and continue to make another left turn into the driveway of the Quaker Meeting house property. However, that is a turn you should take. There is plenty of parking for a short visit to an established Quaker meeting. This is a fully attended Meetinghouse, and attending at one of the meetings has prerequisites in terms of understanding behavior within the meetinghouse. PRIMARILY, silence is saught. You do not need to be a member however, to take a short drive to visit the property. Observing the stone meetinghouse from the outside. On my recent visit I discovered that they have actually taken the gate that leads to the Cemetery off. If you enter the cemetery, immediately to your right you will fine the Richard Stockton headstone. Yes! That Richard Stockton, signer of the Declaration of Independence. The grounds have been maintained nearly as-is for several hundred years with the exception establishing the parking lot, so as not to pick up the mud every time. And the First Day School building, which was built about 35 to 40 years ago. This is used for classrooms, teaching areas, and meeting areas for the local Association of Friends. The whole of these grounds are, that as you enter, should engender a sense of respect. I have been using "A Princeton guide; walks, drives, and commentary” by Cynthia Gooding and Mercedes Rogers. Enjoy.
