This is an unusual park because it was once a working canal in the mid 1800s . You can walk or ride a bike on the towpath while learning about the canal from reading the markers and signs . It is time well spent !

This is one of the nicest outdoor places around Princeton. One of the starting places is at the bottom of the hill leading out of Kingston toward Princeton in what is actually Queenston. There is a small parking area there for hikers and nature visits. In the warmer weather canoeing is easy. When I was just there, there were a flock of Marganser Ducks. An adolescent Bald Eagle swooped down. The old stone bridge is historic. George Washington tore it down once. It was in active use until the new 4 lane bridge went in. Trip Tip: Take your trash with you when you hike.

The path was nice and so were the trails through Bull's Island, we walked but I would definitely come back and bike as well. It was well-traveled but not packed, and we crossed the pedestrian bridge back and forth from NJ to PA at Lumberville.

Very pretty no matter what time of year you walk the canal. Very safe - lots of people and we almost always see the 3 amigos - they are 3 ducks, one brown, one black and one white. They always are together and swimming in the canal. Fun place to walk and see nature.

I have been running on the canal near Blackwells Mills for over 15 years. The path is "paved" with a fine cinder material that has "give" and is easy on the feet. The only problem is that every October there is a Horseback riding event, and even though signs are posted requiring owners to clean up animal "waste" , this arrogant group ignores this. The result is the trails is covered in unsanitary "waste" for weeks. I have complained to the D&R Commission, and when I mention it to the horseback riders, I get blank stares and even cursed at.

This is a great way to experience the way goods were transported before highways, trains and eighteen wheelers. Take your bikes and go as long as you want, or stop where there is a kayak or canoe available to rent and ride along the peaceful canal. Very shady, quiet, no bugs and nature on both sides of the gravel path, including blue herons, fish, turtles and we were told eagles though we didn't see any. Occasionally there is a lock to experience. There are information boards to read about the history of this long ago transportation. Take plenty of water and a picnic lunch, there are areas with picnic tables and benches and the occasional port a potty. Soooo peaceful!
