We were up here to see Princeton and Drumthwacket, the governor's official residence, and decided to see the art museum since we had time. For a college campus, or even for an Ivy League college campus, this museum was chock full of noteworthy art whatever your tastes are. We were very impressed with the number of Rembrandts, Monets, Rodins, Rubens, et al. Don't recall how long it was showing, but currently there is a photography exhibit of 1960s era LA, NYC and Chicago. It's easy to get to the museum but first you must stop at the rear gate to get a temporary pass. We parked in a free spot a few steps away from the museum, but we were lucky. Meters only take quarters.
If you are in the Princeton area, I would recommend a stop at this museum. The lower level houses a permanent collection of early A.D. relics from Asia, Japan and more that is beautifully displayed. Loved it. Upper level had the Byzantine and European art as well as their current exhibit of 60's to 70's Chicago, New York and LA. Great collection and there is no fee to enter. Check it out!
My family and I were impressed at the collection that this museum had to offer for free. It was hard to find on the campus.
Visiting the Princeton Art Museum is one of my favorite things! Both the permanent collection and the exhibits are thought provoking. Standing among the great works of art is an experience to treasure. In warm weather the surrounding gardens are an added attraction. Whenever there are guests visiting, a trip to the Princeton Museum is on the top of my list. I consider this an essential Princeton experience!
The Princeton Art Museum is a very special place to visit. We go often. We take docent tours and love the campus walks to and from. Offering a lovely day on campus as well as a meal in Princeton there is no reason not to visit. With such a large collection it offers more than many other state or city museums we have toured. Friendly and helpful the staff is proud open their exhibits to small groups if requested.
I've been many times over the years and have always been impressed. Visiting the permanent collection is like visiting old friends. The special exhibitions are always well done.Walking the grounds is like visiting a sculpture garden. Well worth the visit!!
It was our first visit at Princeton University and we are hooked with it unique charming atmosphere. The campus itself is a gem of architectural old buildings and the museum has a lot to offer. Founded in 1882, it now houses over 72,000 works of art that range from antiquity to the contemporary period. The Princeton University Art Museum dedicates itself to supporting and enhancing the university’s goals of teaching, research, and service in fields of art and culture, as well as to serving regional communities and visitors from around the world. Its collections concentrate on the Mediterranean region, Western Europe, China, the United States, and Latin America. The museum has a large collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, including ceramics, marbles, bronzes, and Roman mosaics from Antioch. It was a very pleasant experience with lot to enjoy, from art and archeological artifacts. We strongly recommend this museum to be visit by the parents with kids older then 9 yo.. We will definitely go back in spring to revisit the campus and enjoy the magical landscaping at that time.
I lived in NJ for half of my life and never knew about this amazing museum! The collection was impressive. Everything from ancient to modern, sculpture, painting, glass, multimedia, and others. It is a great museum to take children to introduce them to different types of art. The stroll through the beautiful campus to get to the museum was a bonus.
We live in the Princeton area, but we had never made it into this museum. First surprise - it's free. Even more of a surprise - the magnitude and qualify of the collection. We spent about two hours - and we only got through Europe and American. We wandered downstairs, and the Chinese, Mayan, Egyptian - well, there was so much that we decided to come back another day. Well worth the trip - and the price is absolutely right.
My wife and I are serious art lovers. We have been to numerous different art museums in the US and abroad. When a friend recommended the Art Museum at Princeton University I was intrigued but not expecting anything remarkable. Once we arrived at the museum we were quite shocked to see the level of displays. We were very impressed with the late European and American sections. The curator has a large variance of artists and styles. There are some very unique and heavy-hitting pieces. Bravo to Princeton for have such a wonderful museum.
Very manageable collection of pretty impressive paintings easily accessible on a stroll round the campus. Staff very friendly. Astounded to see original Warhol.
Princeton is a small town with big time culture and the University art museum is an amazing example of that. Beautifully laid out, incredible art by some of the greatest artists in history, low-key, you can stay for 20 minutes or three hours without feeling rushed or that you've missed anything. Then you leave and get to walk on on the most beautiful campuses in America.
In a small town like Princeton, with a population of fewer than 30,000 residents, visitors are often surprised to find an art museum of this caliber. Of course, it helps considerably to have a world-class university with an exceptionally large financial endowment to provide the facilities for it on the university campus.Just a short walk from the Nassau Street stores and shops in downtown Princeton, this museum offers world-class exhibits on several floors ranging from Egyptian and Asian antiquities to an extensive and impressive gallery of impressionist paintings and American art and sculpture. Exhibits are regularly updated and freshened from the museum's vast store of artwork that is much greater than the display space available. The best part is that this museum is open to the public for a voluntary contribution or no charge at all. This art museum is just one of the many highlights of historic Princeton but should certainly be on your agenda whenever you visit.
Very impressive collection for a University museum. The building itself is nice. Don't miss the sculptures in the garden. Great collection of American and European art. The basement floor is full of treasures from non-western cultures, but presented in a very "primitivistic" fashion.
I arrived an hour and a half before closing, thinking that was plenty of time to breeze through, and ended up struggling to get it all in! More treasures than expected, including some important Dürer etchings. Great small museum!
