Wonderful and relaxing place to visit. Walk, read a book, enjoy the history......I can't wait to spend more time there.
Washington Crossing State Park spans the river in PA and NJ. While its famous for the Christmas Day crossing, and has a yearly reenactment of this historic event, the park itself is beautiful, especially in the Fall when trees are in full color lining the many walking paths. In summertime, check out the outdoor theatre, where you can see plays most weekends. The NJ side also has opportunities for picnics and a playground. In winter there is a stark beauty, especially when the park is dusted with snow. Several casual restaurants along route 29 are easily accessible for visitors, including Patriots Crossing and Its Nutts.
This is a place best for major history geeks or for those who love hiking. I enjoyed it; my eight year old son, not so much.
Every year on Christmas Day, Washington Crossing State Park in NJ and PA give the public a chance to go back to the American Revolution. Actors stage the Xmas crossing of George Washington and his troops. And yes this was the same place. After marching on Trenton and then marching to Princeton the colonial troops turned the war around. Don't miss this opportunity to have a very, very special Xmas experience.
Nice nature trails. Dog friendly as well. Beautiful views of the Delaware River. Great bicycle paths too.
We were here yesterday to ride along the Delaware River on the Canal Path. This is a great way to spend an autumn day. We have been to the park several times. There is an amazing Visitor's Center with a movie. The museum displays are filled with American history. When George Washington and his troops crossed the Delaware, he did it from this point in the river. It was a major reason for the American successes that followed. Every December, there is a re enactment of the event and prior to the actual crossing, there is a rehearsal. It is a memorable experience and I hope you get a chance to see it. There was no fee yesterday.
Wrote a review on the Pennsylvania side; substantively the same. Absolutely fabulous. If you want Disney World or Times Square this is not the place for you. This a key location in our nation's history; no roller coasters or Hooter's restaurants anywhere in sight. A very pretty walk from the little visitor center/museum to the river; there is a pedestrian bridge over the fairly busy road, and then you can walk to the Pennsylvania side. Be sure to read the signs; they clue you in as to what happened where and when. I did not pay on the NJ side; don't think you had to if you drove to the Visitor's Center and parked there. At any rate it was all of $6 or something; if you are to cheep to pay $6 or so to see a part of our Nation's history...............Did this on a lovely fall day. Will be coming back again to spend more time.
This is thee spot where Genl Geo Washington and his Continental Army successfully crossed the ice-choked Delaware River on Christmas Eve 1776 and launched the surprise attack on the Hessians in Trenton, NJ. Stay in New Hope, PA at a historical B&B inn and visit the park and all its buildings.
This is a wonderful park with beautiful scenery and river views. Supposedly, Washington crossed the Delaware River here in 1776. There are historic houses to visit to get a sense of the land and environment from Revolutionary days. There are walking, biking, and canoeing activities. Great place for families, especially young kids. Blend of the history and fun in one setting. Worth the trip if in the area. Just outside Trenton, NJ.
Washington Crossing State Park hosts nature classes for kids, plays at the amphitheater, historical reenactments, group camping sites for scouts, a nature center and even a revolutionary war museum. Check out their website for a schedule of events.
My husband and I come up here to ride the old tow path on our bikes. If you park down by the Delaware River, and head north, you will enter the town of Lambertville with its nice little shops and restaurants. Cross the bridge and you are in New Hope, PA. You can spend a half or a whole day walking the trail or picking up food for a nice little picnic along the river bank. The trail goes a lot further north, but we only made it up to Frenchtown. We are always excited when we head out there for our rides.
This is a beautiful park and many were hiking through it and enjoying the camping facilities, however, if you are looking to learn about the history of the area, I think the Pennsylvania side gives you more and it is free.
I've always wondered about this place as a child in grade school but it hasn't been given the importance it should have to trigger young minds to explore Americas history. The staff was very helpful and the building in good condition but the grounds give no indication of what happened in our history.
We went here last Saturday, they were hosting a "history fair". They had many exhibitions of wonderful artifacts and historical personal family items. The museum has a really nice revolution artifact displays. There were many people in historical character. Wonderful park for biking or hiking.
For the hiker and outdoorsy folks, this park offers miles of trails that feel remote, but are never far from civilization. For the history afficianado, the park marks the New Jersey side of the Delaware River of George Washington's strategic crossing on Christmas night, 1776. This led to a series of much needed victories for the Americans. Each Christmas afternoon this crossing is re-enacted in cooperation with the sister park on the Pennsylvania side of the river. Don't just come on Christmas, though! The visitors center in the NJ park holds an impressive collection of important artifacts used during the revolution in the area, and they are very well documented. Make a full day of your visit by picnicking in one of the picnic groves, or taking a lunch break in one of the nearby eateries. Visit the park's Nature Center to learn about the local flora and fauna. Let the children play on the playground equipment. Pretend to get lost in the woods, even though the trails are well maintained and marked. If you have a fishing/trout license, drop a line in the canal along with the many other anglers you're sure to see.Although the park "closes at dusk", there are some evening adventures, as well. During the summer evenings enjoy the live entertainment in the Open Air Theater. (Bring bug spray and a blanket.) On select nights, a Princeton astronomy club sets up telescopes in the park to let visitors learn more about the stars, too.I live only a quarter mile from the park because my husband and I always enjoyed coming when we lived further away. It's a local gem, but it's a treasure we locals are happy to share with the world.
