As a West Orange resident, I've been going to Eagle Rock Reservation for years to run. The reservation offers miles of trails that traverse forest streams and some wonderful terrain. It's also the home to a small deer population.Outside of the forest trails, Eagle Rock Reservation is home to Essex County's September 11, 2001 Memorial. The memorial features a wall with the names of those lost on 9/11 and overlooks the Manhattan skyline. It's a wonderful place for some peaceful reflection that offers some great views of New York City. Also located in West Orange is the Highlawn Pavilion, a high-end restaurant and banquet hall. The restaurant also has a great bar that overlooks the NYC skyline - a great stop for a drink with a beautiful view of the city.
Scenic overlook, 9-11 memorial, amazing hiking trails, authentic real indian teepees , and an amazing 5 star restaurant with the skyline view of NYC. Back in the 70's we used to drive up through the reservation...we heard stories that there were still American Indians living in the reservation...we loved hiking there..so scenic, so natural. It's still the same but unfortunately absent of the American Indians. Bring your dog...you may see people riding horses still .. There's a stable nearby. Lots of biking.
We were taken to this lovely [reservation] that has a restaurant, picnic grounds and (I am told) a hiking area, although our main reason was to visit the 911 Memorial where many of the people on the New Jersey side witnessed the tragedy of September 11, 2001. It is beautifully done, with a sense of utter respect for all whose lives were affected. It overlooks Manhattan, with a similar border of marble-slab engravings (as does the 911 Memorial in Manhattan) with the names of the souls who were lost. It has the sequence of events of that day on cast-iron plaques throughout its gardens. It is worth the visit if you are in the area.
