I came to the Historical Society to research a minister's diary that was listed in the online inventory. I emailed in advance of my trip to make certain that the years of interest, 1845-1848, were there. The diary started in 1838 when the minister was a student at Yale and ended upon his death in the 1870s. When I arrived, the person I had an appointment with was late coming to the Office. When the diary was brought out, I was shocked to learn that the volume with the years 1845-1848 was missing, I had made a wasted trip that involved two nights in motels, turnpike tolls, and bridge tolls across five States. If the archivist had told me in advance that the volume I needed was missing, it would have saved me time and money. He did not check in advance to see if the material I wanted was there. I should add that the receptionist downstairs was exceptionally friendly and pleasant and helpful. You don't meet many employees of her caliber.

This is a great old museum that is interesting and nicely done. It I s professionally done with changing exhibits. I really recommend visiting and enjoying. It needs more visitors so that its has more revenue to do more. But this is worth the visit. Near njpac

This is a highly educated group of strong individuals with great interest in preserving the history and records of New Jersey and Newark. The present lectures which detail the history. The presenters are articulate and interesting. I have attended many of these, and have gone away thinking. Some times they will invite some of the up and coming historians as well, who then use this venue to present what will be their thesis. They are highly polished. Go and learn something there. What every you lecture you chose, from favorite subject to "what does this mean" lectures, you will come away less that board.

The New Jersey Historical Society is a museum and research center dedicated to all things New Jersey. New Jersey's history and story is far more diverse than many realize, and this museum presents the many sides of the small, but varied state. Urban, suburban, and rural there are many stories to be had here.A particular exhibit than has been running here long term, What's Going On, explores the many sides of the infamous Newark Riots of July 1967. While a number of retrospectives on this period of civil unrest tend to focus on the gory event itself, What's Going On, explores the time period before, during, and after the disturbances, and tries to answer the questions about why this happened, and the aftermath, good, bad, and otherwise. The society itself is located in a safe, historical part of downtown Newark, and the building itself once housed one of downtown's once numerous business clubs, a throwback to the days when downtown Newark was the power center of New Jersey.Call ahead to verify hours.KenPS There is another review posted here that seems to be about Military Park, a triangle shaped park that sits opposite Park Place from the society.

There were just a few statues and a few cannons. There were also a few homeless folks foaming in the park. Not much to see here, move along....
