Saw "Darwin's Waiting Room", a hilarious sketch comedy group. The seats are all very good but they have no AC, so dress accordingly.
I've been to The Player's Ring for the past three Christmas seasons. The first year I watched an original Christmas production that took play during WWII. The past two times I've been I watched the Christmas Carol. The Player's Ring is a tiny theater so every seat offers a great view. Speaking of seats, the actual seats are old and worn but I believe by this time they may have been replaced. Now onto the shows, all three have been very well done. This place certainly doesn't have the space for some fancy effects but I think that is part of it's charm. In my experiences, the sets are always simple so the audience is entirely focused on the cast and the cast have always put on a GREAT show. I plan to return to The Player's Ring and surely recommend it to others!
Everything from Shakespeare to silliness, classic to contemporary is presented in a wonderfully intimate space. Best value for the dollar in the whole seacoast area.
The Player's Ring is a true Portsmouth treasure. I have seen some of the best plays of my life here, and nothing they put on is ever worse than above average. $15 gets you coffee, cookies, tea, conversation with interesting people, and a seat right next to the action in a true theater in the round. The last play I saw was a birthday gift from my mother. She knows where I like to spend my time off.
One of several live theatre venues in Portsmouth. They offer a variety of productions throughout the year from popular favorites to original works by local playwrites. Prices are very affordable.
If you are into avante garde theater or improv, this is a good place to visit. The theater is very artist driven and offers a wide array of theatrical choices. This was a favorite of mine when I lived in the area.
It's small; only about 50 seats, and the venue is a very old building with no a/c and perhaps not as much heat as they could have in the winter, but it's a wonderful place to see (mostly) locally written and produced plays. You're right on top of the action, which is great; you feel like you're a part of that action. Ya gotta check it out sometime, it's great!
I love small theatres such as this one. There are few seats, so everyone is close to the stage in sort of a horseshoe configuration around the stage. The theatre is in an old, historic building right near the water. The shows are always a lot of fun, and the prices are very good. The quality of the productions will amaze you for such a small, local group.Find a show that you are interested in, and get tickets! Support your local theatre!
We have seen some fantastic plays here. Among them, MacBeth, A Streetcar Named Desire, One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest, and The Odd couple. It is amazing what they can do with the small space they have. Terrific actors and actresses. Very intimate setting.
Live theater, generally well done, in an intimate setting for not much more than movie tickets--a great deal for good entertainment in this sometimes pricey tourist city. We've seen some great plays here, and some that were less than great, but still entertaining. Tickets are $12-15, so it's not much of a financial risk for a nice evening of live entertainment.
