We LOVE the Woodtick theater located in Akeley MN! The show is lively and entertaining and the musicians are so talented. We have gone three years in a row and each year the show is changed a little bit to keep you guessing what is next! Hank, the fiddle player (plays many instruments but most known for his fiddle) is no longer with the show and we got to see his last performance! It was outstanding. He will be greatly missed from that show. We will go next year just to see how it's changed, but I'm not sure how it can be the same without Hank. He added so much- his voice, his character, his persona- all so cool. His talent is beyond exceptional. The other musicians are very talented as well, so they might be able to carry it off without him, we'll see! It's mostly bluegrass, folk, country and a bit of oldies/classic rock that is included in the show. It's a couple hours long with an intermission and there is wonderful popcorn to purchase! I love this place!!
This is a very enjoyable evening. Clap or sing along or just sit back and enjoy the good music and corny jokes. I suppose my expectations were low as we're out here in a town of 400 in the middle of Northern Minnesota. But there was some good talent in the show, especially the fiddle player. Each musician rotates through the spotlight and plays something they like while the others back them up. It turns out to be an eclectic selection with some funny chicken songs. (Apparently "ghost chickens" is an annual standard.)The people (ushers, concessions, announcer) are all very friendly and helpful. A real treat all around. Suitable for the whole family.
Visited this theater when I was on a girlfriend getaway during the summer of 2010. A fun night for us and during intermission we all went outside to watch the Hubbell Satellite go over.
One might never think about putting Akeley MN in the same category as Branson or Nashville, but you will after an afternoon or evening at the Woodtick Theatre! This 2 1/2 hour show features some of the best guitar-playin', banjo-pickin, foot-stompin music you'll find north of those other two places. Given that the WOODTICK has been in operation for 22 years now, it's hard to believe I didn't even find them listed on TripAdvisor. Guess it's one good thing the locals are trying to keep secret... although that hasn't been too successful at all. Tour buses bring crowds from the Twin Cities, the Dakotas and Canada to see the show. (Some, of course, also make a side trip to one of the nearby casinos.)You'll find not just Country music, but a wide variety of show tunes, original compositions, humorous musical spoofs, ballads, modern hits and more -- all woven together pretty seamlessly by a very, very talented group of 6-8 players who call the North Country home. Ranging in age from late teens to near retirement age, the musicians have formed a unique bond by performing together over many seasons. What's more, they are multi-talented -- switching positions and instruments from time to time during the show. To break up the music, down-home humor bits (sometimes called corny jokes) are interspersed.RESERVATIONS are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Many shows are sold out weeks in advance, but the process is painless. Call and they'll save a seat for you. Pay when you get there by cash or check. Your word is as good as a handshake, and that's still good enough for business in Northern Minnesota. After (or before) you visit the WOODTICK, I'd also heartily recommend a visit to The Brauhaus, an authentic German Restaurant just a couple miles west of the theatre. Great menu, cold German beer, and Strudel -- what more could you ask for? It's a perfect place to re-enjoy the performance in conversation. I plan to take most of our visitors to enjoy this experience in the future; you should consider it too. (And PS, I don't own stock in the theatre or the restaurant!)
