Fascinating place to visit. We were pleasantly surprised that it was such a scenic view. Who'd have thought that an open pit mine could be "majestic"?

There are a lot of photo-ops here and the staff is very friendly! We are glad we stopped by! We don't have small children but there were a few there and they loved the big trucks etc.

The mine view and collection of mining equipment from the past is a must to help understand the history of mining in Northern Minnesota

Grew up in Hibbing and didn't appreciate the vast Hull Rust Mining Pit until I was older. Now whenever I go back to visit, I have to go see it. Not only is it interesting to see, especially the timed dynamite blasts, but it's Hibbing history and what created this town to begin with. If you're in the area, then you must take an hour to go see the Hull Rust Mining Pit!

Oddly enough, no one does much to promote this place. It's not easy to find, and once there, there is nothing glitzy about it. Of course, the operations of an iron mine which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and has been doing that for decades should not be glitzy...but somehow it really is interesting.Anyway, getting to the largest open-pit iron mine in the world is easy if someone tells you. It's almost a secret...probably because no one is making any $$ from the public presentation...it's FREE! That said, there are some really pleasant volunteers who staff the operation, and they've provided a range of interesting factual materials. But really, you're here to see the mine, right? Well, the space is huge and in some ways looks a bit like the Grand Canyon. However, the actual work of mining, well, it's going on a mile or more away. Imagine: Huge trucks which can haul 240 tons (that's TONS!) of material with one load running all over the landscape, but it's more than a mile away. I'll try to post a photo of the trucks...but for kids...well it's not so exciting to see the mine operations underway (maybe for adults too). The good folks have tried to make up for that by having a retired truck near the entrance to the area. Kids/adults can climb up into it, and get the feel a driver might have of driving a small house around for 12 hours per day (that's the shift).Long story short, if you're nearby, you should take a look. As you drive to the site you'll pass the somewhat ghostly remains of North Hibbing...the town which had to move to accommodate the mines.

Hull Rust Mine makes for a very nice trip - especially with children or grandchildren. It is educational and interesting. The mine is active for many years, so you can actually see the huge trucks working on most days. In addition, there is a selection of equipment that makes for an excellent photo op. Plan to spend an hour or two here.

Huge open cut mine, interesting to learn about the history of the area, how they moved the whole town.

A fun trip for the kids. . They can see the big dump trucks working down below. There's is also a big dump trunk you can climb on!

I have visited this site a number of times over the years. It is a great place to bring out-of-town guests for a view of a working mine. Also available on site are some pieces of mining equipment so folks can get an up close experience with the size of trucks and other pieces that have been used. Inside the visitor center/gift shop you will find knowledgeable volunteers who can answer questions and direct you to other places of interest in the area. Local artists have items available for sale in the shop. Make sure you check them out!

This is a working mine, you can look down the pit & see actual workings of men & machine. There is a short video about what goes on to mine the material & the uses of the material. An outside exhibit of mine truck, tires & equipment you can climb on

It was very interesting. The people that run it know the history. We walked around and stood by the equipment. You could look down into the mine. 600"

This tour is a must if you are seeking to learn more about mining in northern Minnesota. Our tour guide, Karl, was terrific and helped us to see, feel and hear what it might have been to work the mines in the late 1800's-early 1900's. This tour is great for families with children in elementary-high school

Something sad about this place. Windy. Fence to keep you from tumbling into the pit. In the bathroom you see a sign: "Please don't drink the water."

Growing up with this monster pit in my back yard, it still puts me in awe every single time. Free to visitors. Don't go Wednesdays at 11--they are close for blasting. If you are in town and you feel the earth shake--that's why!! Don't panic, the rest if us barely even notice unless its 'a big one.' The truck that's on display is smaller than the ones they are using today-but good replica. You can take actual tours of the mine itself by calling The MN discovery center.

This is an amazing mine to view. The mine itself is so huge, it is truly amazing. The grounds have many of the large machines and trucks that have been used in the mines in the past and must be seen to be appreciated. The visitors center is very good and has much information to view.
