St. Cloud is mostly chain restaurants so we were happy to discover the old bar located downtown with wooden floors, tin ceiling, and giant booths. As we arrived before 4 pm the lunch menu was only available and the bartender nicely suggested we waited for dinner for the larger selection. It had a very eclectic menu with pasta, Thai, burgers, steak, lamb, vegetarian, and gluten free options. Being Thai foodies we were excited to try their Thai Green Curry and Madras. While both meals were decent and we were a little disappointed as the Madras was way too lemony and bitter while my Green Curry was very, very sweet. The spicy Thai wings were good but the other two dishes were two extreme. We will be back to try other dishes and for the atmosphere.
We don't' drink at all, so it is pretty rare I visit an establishment that is primarily a bar. Looking for unique eats, we have tried this place a couple of times. It has been "lick your plate clean" both times. I haven't tried the more ethnic entrees the chef creates, but I think soon I might be ready too; the food is very good here!
I was somewhat taken aback by the more 'laid back' décor....like a log cabin or lodge type rather than what I was expecting. But the location right on the Mississippi River was wonderful. We had great entertainment throughout the meal with all of the various ducks and geese that would be swimming or walking right by all of the windows. The view was wonderful....Our waitress was very nice and helpful. The menu was quite extensive, we went for lunch and it took the group of us (4) quite awhile to decide on what to order. It took a little longer than I thought to get the food but everyone enjoyed it and the price was reasonable. I would go again, especially when the trees were green. I imagine it's just beautiful..
After doing some research online, I learned about The White Horse in St. Cloud and decided to give it a try. Prepare to be underwhelmed by the ambiance when walking in, but pleasantly surprised by the extensive menu. Whether you're looking for a steak, lamb chops, Thai cuisine, or pasta, The White Horse has it all. Our waitress was pleasant, professional, and knowledgeable about beer. The restaurant was packed, but our table of 8 was seated immediately. If you're looking for a good meal in this college town that's much more than burgers and fries or pizza, The White Horse is a good bet.
