The town of Two Harbors is named for the two harbors, Agate Bay and Burlington. Two Harbors is Located 20 miles northeast of Duluth, MN, on MN HWY 61 on the shores of Lake Superior. Twice I have visited the loading docks at Agate Bay at dawn before sunrise to watch the large lakers being loaded with Iron ore pellets. The light from the docks reflecting in the water makes for a spectacular view. It's also a chance to watch the large lakers come in and dock from the long breakwater across from to docks.
Pretty red color but grounds were closed. We walked down around the breakwater but we were not too impressed with the property. The Iron Ore loading docks across the harbor were huge and we would have loved to see a ship receiving its cargo. Nice visit but not worth a return to that area.
Didn't cost anything if you got coupon from library, but there is no tour guide. It is self guided. Located right by breakwall so plan time to walk out on that as well.
One of the best parts of this visit were the deer roaming free on the grounds. Loved the view and the history here. Make it a stop when you are in town. There is a bed and breakfast there too which looked romantic.
Coming to Two Harbors and not checking the Lighthouse, adn the hitory inmersed in it? Well it is a nice review of history, well kept and mantained with the operating lighthouse.
The Two Harbors Light is the oldest operating lighthouse in the US state of Minnesota. Overlooking Lake Superior's Agate Bay, the lighthouse is located in Two Harbors, Minnesota. The construction of the Lighthouse began in 1891.We were traveling through this area and had this lighthouse on the list to stop. I'm glad we did. It was a cold blustery day when we stopped so we couldn't spend the time we wanted. We will definitely return so we can spend more time. If you are traveling nearby this is a must stop.
We enjoyed our stay. We chose the Skiff House because Marilyn doesn't do well with stairs. Jacuzzi was great. Each breakfast was very good. Cheryl and Rose added to the enjoyment with their knowledge of local history.
While it's not spectacular it's still worth a stop, if you are taking the north shore drive this should be on your list of stops. It's a lighthouse, not an amusement park so the kids weren't quite as impressed with it as some others might be.
While not a picturesque as its better-known neighbor at Split Rock, this is worth a visit. Take to easy walk on the breakwall for a little exercise during a long road trip.
This is another old lighthouse that has been restored with a small museum. It was interesting to see how things were "back in the day".
Not worth the $9 admission fee. Couldn't spend more than twenty minutes walking through the lighthouse and out buildings, unless you take the guided tour. Even then, not a place to spend much time unless you want to hike the trails on the grounds.
The lighthouse is okay. Split Rock is way better. IT is a B&B so do not plan on a tour. Great place to see the huge ore ships and rail cars. Very industrial and scenic too. You can imagine when this was really booming. Worth a thirty minute visit.
The lighthouse is actually a B&B, which we did not stay in. You can get nice photos of the lighthouse, but there is a fence around it so you can't get too close or inside unless you're staying at the B&B. In the area you can watch lake freighters coming into dock.
We spent a couple of hours on the waterfront in Two Harbors one evening. It's a nice level walk on the break wall out to the lighthouse. The path is wide with a railing on one side. The walk provides a good look at the ore boats that are still in use at the docks. Back on shore there are hiking trails that lead to the rocky beach and to the dock area. We chose to climb around on the large rock outcropping for a while and then drive to the dock area as darkness was approaching. In all, a very interesting place to spend an evening.
Just a great experience overall. This is what the area is all about guiding ships in the harbor , right? Fun gift shop and nice values, too. I think everyone that has visited has a picture of this Lighthouse!
