When we hear the word Peninsula, we think of a land of body surrounded by water on 3 sides, right? Well, in Voyageurs National Park the Kabetogama Peninsula is accessible only by water! Sandwiched by Rainy Lake to the North and Kabetogama Lake to the south, we love boating to and exploring the Kab Pennisula. On the south shore, The #1 Picnic / Shore Lunch spot is Ellsworth Rock Sculpture gardens. It is so wonderful and unique we suggest you add it to your "bucket list!" It has a fabulous dock system, picnic tables and shelter (and porta-potty too), bluff with great views & self guided tour describing 20 features of the park. In 2014, the Cutover island across the bay from Ellsworth Park, frequently had Eagles overhead hunting or in the trees. Majestic! Keep an eye out for them...You can rent canoes, kayaks or motor boats from local resorts to do a "day trip" and explore, bring your own, or align your schedule with the National Park Visitor Center that has a tour once a week. We take our boats out of Northern Lights Resort & Outfitting and it is about a 1 hour paddle or a 15 minute motor boat ride. Mr. Ellsworth lived on the Kab Pennisula now the site of Ellsworth Park in the 50's/60's, prior to it becoming a National Park and back to wilderness waterways. He dedicated over 30 years of his life to working with the land, and rocks, and building terraced rock gardens and sculptures by hand with chisel & pulleys. I'm inspired not only by the rustic beauty of ancient rocks, forests and waterways; but also the vision, fortitude and commitment of one man and a tribute to what one person can accomplish! It's a great teaching tool with youth...Several great hiking trails to interior lakes - take the time to reserve a "free canoe" from the park service, drop a line in the water and stay a while to fish and explore in wilderness waterways. My family and friends highly recommend Voyageurs National Park and our favorite spot is Lake Kabetogama and exploring based out of Northern Lights Resort. You won't be disappointed by the only National Park in Minnesota -- it's a gem.
Our vacations started 16 years ago at Voyageur Park Lodge, beautiful spot, great cabins and awesome service. It started out with just my husband and I and now we have our children and grandchildren join us and we reserve two weeks in the summer. It doesn't get better then Voyageur Park Lodge, not to mention Kab is a beautiful lake, the fishing is great and the islands and wildlife are awesome, this lake is so big you will never see all of it in a life time. We have stayed in most the cabins at VPL over the years and they are all have great views and are clean and comfortable, but our favorite is The Point! Just my two cents on where you should vacation Up in Northern Minnesota.
We took the water taxi to the peninsula then hiked to Crane Lake to our rented canoe. The hike was beautiful with lots of places to stop and take in the beauty. The hike took us 2.5 hours one way. Very enjoyable day with nothing but peace and nature. Total time with the water taxi, hiking and canoeing was 9 hours. We could have stayed longer but a storm was approaching. We made it back just in time to watch a lightning show over the lake from the safety of the lodge. Take water and food and be prepared.
We have been going to Lake Kabetogama for 30 years plus. We have had friends who had a cabin up there for years and have stayed with them. Our son searched out a place where our whole family could go and have a great time. He found voyagers Park Lodge. What a great place to stay. Casey and Anna who own and run the resort are great folks. It is a real family resort. The lake can't be beat and the view from this resort is great. All I can say is go see it for yourself. If you want see what the north country is all about check out there web cam. RegardsAl and Carol
I've been staying at Voyageur Park Lodge for the last four season's in June, with my family. I have been fishing this lake since five years old. My dad didn't have a good fishing boat when I was a kid. Owning my own boat and knowing the lake after all these years I would rather put my boat on Casey's docks than anywhere else on the lake. Not only do you get shelter for your rig, but you get one of the best views of the lake. The privacy is unmatched, the view is spectacular, and I have yet to meet better hosts on the lake than Casey and Anna. If you want to be left alone it's perfect, if you want to hang out on the dock, it's even better. I could go on for days about my love for Voyageur Park Lodge, but you still gotta come up and see it for yourself, you wont be disappointed.Yours sincerely,Troy, Ariana, and Jackson StJohn. Come catch some fish!
If you are looking for a very private, quiet, rustic place with unbeatable scenery, then Voyageur Park Lodge is the place for you. The cabins are a bit older, but are well maintained and have everything you should need. My husband and I have stayed here the past 4 years and can't wait to go back. Casey, Anna, and staff are extremely accommodating and truly want their guests to have the best vacation possible. They present a very laid back, casual demeanor around the guests yet eagerly fulfill any requests (i.e. fish cleaning, gas, cords for battery charging, etc.) promptly.
We whole-heartedly recommend Voyageur Park Lodge to anyone looking to book a resort providing amazing hospitality and the seclusion that can't be found anywhere else on Lake Kabetogama. We have been visiting VPL for over 12 years and wouldn't consider staying anywhere else. The management, Casey & Anna, are like family and treat us as such when we are there. It is easy to make the cabins feel like home as they are equipped with all the necessities you can think of including a welcome basket with all the fixins' for s'mores. Wood is always delivered promptly and when arrive, our rented boat is awaiting us on our private dock filled with a tank of gas. The property offers a scenic respite since it is located on a private peninsula. The various cabins offer amenities for all group sizes and we have done trips with just the two of us as well as the entire extended family. Savvy travelers know to check out the website of any place they plan to visit and the VPL site is certainly useful for viewing pictures of the cabins as well for getting a feel of what to expect. If you seek a private, tranquil setting on the shores of Lake Kabetogama, VPL is the place for you and your family. We will never go anywhere else.
My husband and I have been coming to Voyageur Park Lodge for 9 years. We love the area, Voyageur Park and lake Kabetogama. This is an awesome place to come to just relax and leave behind the demands of everyday life! Cell phone use is very limited (I can receive text messages only) but if you must connect there is free wi fi available at the lodge. We absolutely love the quiet, my husband loves feeding the chipmunks, (they climb his leg for peanuts) and there is always some deer around for you to see. The cabins are rustc but very clean and well maintained with lots of privacy. The boats are well kept and we really enjoy having a dock boy. There is always someone there as you go out and someone there to help you when you return to dock. They also will clean and package your fish for transport home. We are from Indiana where the summers are hot and humid so we really enjoy the comfortable temps. There are some very interesting things to do that are close to the lodge. We have taken a boat tour to Kettle Falls, enjoyed the Vince Shute bear sanctuary and quite a few very good places to eat upon Casey's recommendations. Casey and Anna are a wonderful friendly couple that are eager to help in any way to make your stay most enjoyable!!
Greetings we are a family owned and operated resort with ownership and managers with over 56 years of successful resort ownership. We understand that it's difficult to have 100 percent positive feedback with a service based industry, but that is what we strive to provide. Sarah checked in with her husband between 4-6 pm on September 13th and was due to stay a week with us checking out September 20 in our Loggers cabin. Her reservation was made in March. Like all other guests, welcomed them and pointed them to their cabin. After they checked out the cabin they came down for DVD's and asked for firewood. We delivered the wood 5 minutes after being asked. The next time we would see them was at 9am Sunday September 14th. Sarah came into our office demanding a refund and threatening to call the BBB. I was caught off guard by how she presented herself. I had asked what happened and she mentioned that the bed was not comfortable and she did not sleep well. Since they had only been here a total of 12-15 hours I offered to move them to our Point cabin that was open. The Point offers 2 King size beds, 4 twins, satellite television and wood burning fireplace and rents for 3 times as much as she was paying, but they chose to leave. In regards to bed size I (Casey) answer 100 percent of the phone calls and would never say that Loggers has a queen size bed. We offer 11 cabins and not one queen size bed on the property. We do have Kings, Fulls/doubles and twin beds. The heat in the Loggers cabins is base board electric with a thermostat right on the unit. All the guests would have had to do is turn the knob to a higher setting and things would have been toasty warm. Sarah was right when she mentioned wireless it is only located in our main Lodge due to limited internet speeds in the great North woods. As for privacy one quick ride down our peninsula and you will see why it's one of the most private collection of cabins in northern Minnesota. From the front deck of Loggers you can not see a cabin to the right and to the left you can barely see Cattails cabin through the trees. Sarah was also accurate when she said there were cabins across the bay that Loggers over looks. These cabins are 4-5 hundred yards across open water. We appreciate Sarahs review and will continue to strive for 100 percent positive feedback.
We paid 280.00 for 7 family members to take the boat from Kabetogama visitors center to Kettle Falls. We were supposed to have 2 hours on the island . We went immediately to the restaurant after the 2 hour long boat ride. Our order was taken immediately ,we sat in the restaurant for one hour and forty five minutes!!! When we only had 15 minutes left to explore the island we told the waitress we noticed all the tables who came in behind us had all been served and we could no longer wait. She said, Well they are with the boat tour. And we said so are we !!! The manager then said, we are short staffed. I guess if you are short staffed you serve people in a random order ? Not as they come in ? By this time my nieces blood sugar had dropped and she was feeling dizzy. We went back to the boat to get her the crackers and trail mix we had brought along. we told our guides ( Who also had lunch ) and they exact reply was " THE TIME ON THE ISLAND IS YOUR OWN" I disagree, we had no time n our own on the island. This day was a wasted day of vacation and 280.00 wasted. Hire a rpivate guide, take your own boat and bag a lunch. Kettle falls is owned by voyagers, they need to take responsibility for it. A full refund is due.
I spent the night at the Woodenfrog campground and awoke before sunrise to watch the beauty of nature unfold as I sat behind the CCC dinning house next to the boat launch. This Voyageurs National Park entrance offers a little more to do and see without a boat. With glimpses of rocky shorelines and nature and wildlife all around you. Once again the visitors center was closed as I came in late and was out early, but there are 2 boat launches, some trails and lots of great scenery. Enjoy!
I have been going up to Kab for 60 years. My husband and I go to Sandy Point Lodge and are always treated like family. Fishing is great and there is always something to do.
It is so beautiful it makes me realize how God does all things well! We have many family memories that were made there.
We were lucky enough to get on one of the last tours of the season. This is the best way to truly experience Kabetogama. Our captain Scott was friendly and his knowledge of the water was obvious. Ranger Miranda was informative and very pleasant as well. Saw many eagles, eagle nests, and beautiful scenery. The stop at Kettle Falls was enjoyable with a very tasty lunch served up in the hotel. This tour is a Must! Take the time to drive around and hike the Voyageuers and Beaver Pond Overlook Trails too.
We went to the Voyageurs National Park visitor center here and did a one hour hike. Would love to take the Kettle Falls ranger led boat tour next year. Friendly & informative staff at the Kabetogama visitor center.
