Sugar Loaf overlooks the lovely valley and Lake Winona; we've had many photos of our son taken there when he was at college. Our grandma did a painting of Sugar Loaf which was given to him and new wife at their wedding. Now we go for the memories! It's the trademark of Winona!
A feature of the hills, this rock formation juts out towards the sky in unique fashion and beauty. Very interesting to see as it dominates the locale.
It is a nice hike up the hill for a great view. Remember it is against the law to climb the actual rock There are no picnic areas or official trails to get there
We love to go shopping for antiques and found a couple wonderful, good buys here. One item, was so large, we thought it might not fit in our vehicle, but the folks helped us carry it out, not even knowing for sure we'd buy it. It fit, and we bought it! A nice place to spend a couple hours!
I've never been up to Sugar Loaf, but used to have an apartment right across from it during my WSU years. It's the most prominent local landmark in Winona, and it's fun to look at in the evening when it is illuminated. If you can find your way up there, I've heard it is climbable, but I've never tried (I'm clumsy and every so often someone falls off, with predicatable bad results).
You can see this from mile away...it's what is left after they had mined the top of this hill.
Sugar loaf is a beautiful area. Again, free. Don't have money? This is good exercise without hitting the pocket book.
I grew up with it. The bluff is a landmark that overlooks Lake Winona which use to be part of the Mississippi River. It is still an impressive sight.
you probably can't find out how to get up there unless you have someone who has been up there before, the hike starts on the back side of the bluff in a residential area and you can't really find it on your own. So ask around! But probably a 15-20 minute hike up the bluff where you get a stunning view of Winona (as you get from Garvin, however Garvin you can also drive up to the top instead of hiking). It is illegal to climb Sugarloaf the rock itself as people do it all the time, and sometimes they die unfortunately. It is definitely worth the hike though.
