We were very surprised by the depth and quality of this museum. Many artifacts of regional interest, charmingly displayed and thoughtfully described. Would be wonderful to add a few more interactive exhibits for children -- our 7 year old daughter loved the steamboat and the cave, and she was looking around for more opportunities to step back into river history. Great gift shop with many Made in USA history-themed gifts.
This is a lovely museum in a combined new and lovingly restored building. The buggy collection is astounding and the riverboat display intriguing. They have a nice and substantial time line exhibit that is interesting. We found two inaccuracies regarding the history of corn and logging that we some what troubling.
We always enjoy learning about the local history of the places we visit, and the Historical Society here has some very nice exhibits. The displays are well done, so you can see things clearly, and it's a nice mix of things. Well worth spending some time here!
I could not believe it! The whole time we were there a guy (older, betw 60-70) yammered on his cell phone THE WHOLE TIME we were there! Oh, and on his SPEAKER phone too! What a jerk.
Tucked into a relatively nondescript building in downtown Winona this history museum is a treasure trove of local area history. It is beautifully arranged. Displays are classy and up to date. The floor area is much bigger than one would expect seeing the building from the outside. Well worth a visit.
It is free to view a changing exhibit in the beautiful new wing and $5 to view the musty, old-school exhibit on Winona's history. The volunteer at the desk purveyed history cliches and was not a great ambassador.
receently updated displays jam packed with info on the entire area see it first and plan your excursions around ithe info you will NOT be disappointed
This museum is an interesting, well-organized place to start learning about Winona. Learn about the lumber and steamboat and their place in the city's history.
The exhibits are interesting and the have an interactive part for kids that mine really enjoyed. Two thumbs up!
It was nice to see the new expansion of the museum. Everyone was very helpful and the displays were well done. It is a museum children can enjoy too. I would like to see more displays though as I know there is a lot of artifacts store there.
A wide variety of exhibits and the history of Winona is contained in this museum. Tableaus showing how the town used to be and a display of locally made canoes makes this museum worth an hour of your time.
we went to the cemetery walk this past weekend in Winona. what a great time we all had! it was so informative and fun. we will be back for sure next year. if you are in Winona in October, do not , do not!! miss this activity it is truly a fun afternoon!
One of the best historical societies you'll ever see. Great displays and interesting artifacts.Wonderful gifts and mementos too. Children will especially enjoy the exhibits and American Girls Dolls.
Once upon a time this was a rich lumbertown served by the river, the railroad, and an immigrant populaiton. The architectural history from a re-creation of the hieroglyphs in a Native American cave to the mansions of the wealthy to the banks to the old courthouse to the businesses in the old town is fascinating. The Laird addition has opened up what was a small, dark museum into one with light and contemporary character. You'll like it.
It's a good stop to make. They change things up with different exhibits. The renovations have done amazing things for the place. You can always play the Steinway in the lobby. You can spend an afternoon looking through the collections.
