It's about two miles in from the parking lot to the shores of Angleworm Lake. Along the way you go past a beaver pond, over a bridge, and through typical BWCAW scenery. We've always gone in August, and the bugs haven't been bad then.
Bring your bug repellent or wear netting over your face. Beautiful hike. A little long but a great workout. The lake is beautiful. A good three hour expedition. Pack a lunch. It's beautiful once you reach the lake.
A long day trip into the Boundary Waters but it was a great outing for the family and we enjoyed finding and seeing the pictographs.
A lo-o-o-ng hike through the trees gets you to this big lake. A trail of sorts goes around it in 14 miles. If you like hiking in the forest, this is a good hike. If you want big views, go elsewhere.
Angelworm Lake is really nice. Very pretty and serene. The views from around the lake are great. However, WARNING FOR HIKERS. There is a 'trail' that goes around the lake but because it is a Wilderness Area THE TRAILS ARE NOT MARKED. They want to protect the beauty and the 'feel' of loneliness. Ok thats great but for a hiker trying to accomplish a loop hike you can forget it unless you are pretty saavy with a topo map and compass. Good luck finding that map. There are so so so many intersecting trails from bear/moose/canoes/kayaks that you will not be sure which trail is for you. We attempted this as a day hike and half turned back and half got really really lost. We are talking exceptionally experienced hikers. So I do recommend the lake and the hike was nice till the lost thing became a factor. DO NOT GO WITHOUT A SUPER GREAT MAP, a COMPASS and a HEADLAMP.
