We always stop here while we're in Duluth just to see if things have changed since the year prior, and to see what different ice formations are going on
The drive out to Park Point is always fun. We were last there in the winter, but each season has its own appeal. This is a particularily warm winter, but there were still lots of folks ice fishing on the river side (port side). On the other side, Superior was up to it's usual display.
I just love Park Point. It has something for everyone of every ability. If your short on time just over the lift bridge to the east you will find the first beach parking lot. This is a nice beach close to canal park and the old light house on the canal. this is a nice short walk with a good view of the city. On the west side a block down you will find the bayside small craft slips. The coast guard usually has a ship there and if you like to look at the boats this is a nice spot to go. If you travel down to the end of park point you can get a boat or jet ski in on one of the two bayside launching ramps. There is ample free parking and the boat launches are in good shape. On the East side there are several areas to get onto the lakeside beaches. All of the beaches are very nice and well worth the trip. There are grills. bathrooms, volleyball courts expansive fields to play Frisbee, or walk your dog. In this area there are paved paths to walk on or if you are handicapped the paved walkways are perfect for wheelchairs. My favorite thing to do is to go all the way down to the end by the Sky Harbor Airport. Here you can rent a plane and take a short flight. It is best to call ahead. But if you are like me and want to walk where it is not crowded at all. Here you can go to the lake side and walk south. Much of the time I find myself all alone. About three quarters of a mile there is a old growth forest between the beach and the harbor to explore. If you have a lot of energy you can walk along the beach to the south all the way to the slip between Minnesota and Wisconsin. Something for everyone. Unique and well worth a part of your day.
There are a few beaches to go to.. The water looks so nice like a ocean.. But be ready for very cold, water . Nice to walk the beach. Down the very end is a park that you can walk and a small play ground .
'Marciaville" a mini, serene, beautiful home lighting display on the lake. See this soon before Marcia ends her holiday lighting passion.
SEE my review of Canal park. The beach is great water temp depending on the wind can be ok other times a little chilly.
Supposedly this is one of the longest fresh water sand spits in the world, but I am not sure. What I *do* know is that this is a great spot for all seasons.Suggestions from a local:1) The beach at Lafayette Square is our favorite, and not as far down as the main beach.2) You can walk out along the beach for miles toward the end of Minnesota Point. Park your car by the airport and then head away from the lift bridge. Very few people, and if you want, you can return via a path that heads through a nice pine forest.3) The snow and ice formations can be really pretty in winter, and form into weird shapes as they freeze and thaw.4) The swimming is best on days when the wind is blowing *in* from the lake -- the warm top water is blown in to the beach -- and often these are days when it is not all that warm (the winds from the east or northeast tend to be cool winds). On the hottest days, the water can be the coldest, because the winds tend to be from the south or southwest when it is hot, and those winds blow the warm water away from the beach.5) Like any beach, a great place to take kids. No need to bring toys, the kids will find plenty to play with on the beach (driftwood, stones, feathers, and the sand).
Many people come here to go to the beach but few take the time to hike all the way down to the Superior Entry and see the adjacent Wisconsin Point and lighthouse. We've done this hike in the spring and now in the fall and it's an easy 2 mile hike along the beach and through the red and white pine forest (beware of poison ivy!). Along the way, you'll see some log cabin-like structures that look pretty neat and an old concrete warehouse that faces the harbor (a nice place to sit and have lunch). At the end of Minnesota Point is the remnants of a lighthouse that was built in the mid-1850's to guide vessels into the harbor before Duluth dug out their canal. A great way to spend an afternoon.
Visited Duluth with family from Denmark and took in the Art Festival at Park Point. Entertainment was great. Variety of artists was excellent. Very enjoyable day. We will mark our calendars to visit at this time again next year.
We drove all the way to the end of Park Point. We parked and walked over the dunes to the beach. Wonderful views and soft sand! We searched for rocks and driftwood and had a great time!
Be very careful not to wreck a very, very, very good thing.Oh, rats, it wants me to say more. More more more
Park Point is a quaint neighborhood you can drive through and see unique houses, quaint cottages, fixer-uppers and Lake Superior. There's a local park you can park at and walk the beach or at the end of the road. Park your car and get out and walk the beach. It reminds me of what I think NE US would look like on the ocean (sort of). Wind blown grasses, flowers, sand. Just beautiful and peaceful. LOVE it!!!
We drove out to Park Point since we were staying at the Park Point Marina Inn. We wanted to see what it was. This is a huge park with things the kids can play on and explore. There is probably more here, we just drove through and out again.
One of the favorite stops on our vacation are the beaches at Park Point. While I think the water is cold, the kids always love it. They love digging in the sand and finding cool rocks!
Park Point has a great view of Lake Superior and Duluth (my picture was taken there). It also has numerous benches, outdoor grills & tables on the bayside, with lovely pine trees, views of the harbor, and ball fields if you're looking for a game. Great for picnics, walks, beach activities and swimming (on warm days), or just reading under the shade of a tree.
