Interesting tour and beautiful grounds. Very large grounds, be ready for lots of walking. We had beautiful pictures taken by the lake and flowers. Definitely a 1/2 day commitment.
Wow this mansion was amazing! Every room had a story to tell. They grounds were beautiful with all the flowers and the fountain; very well-kept. Our tour guide was very informative and answered a lot of questions from the group.
The mansion and estate grounds are beautiful. The tour was interesting and informative. The guide encouragned questions and provided good insights into the Congdon family. We enjoyed the tour.
What a Great Indoor / Outdoor Activity! Beautiful gardens and bay views. Interior architectural designs and furnishings were unique. The family story and historical perspective we're intriguing.
We went to the mansion due to the very low temperatures outside. If you are going here to hear the murder story then dont bother because they are not supposed to talk about it. They take you through the mansion and tell you about the history of the family and each room. Very informative. I wish I would have read up on the family before going just so I could have a back history.
Knowledgeable staff, able to see all of the mansion including the large grounds and lake shore. Great.
We visited for a daytime tour of the house and also had a limited time to explore the grounds before our toes froze. We were three adults and two teenagers - our guide was kind of a stick in the mud but he thought he was very humorous...that was funny in itself. There are some very beautiful rooms in this home and some of the furniture is gorgeous. We all enjoyed it.
I toured the Glensheen about 15 years ago. I thought it was time to take another tour. I was well rewarded. The interpretation by UMD students is wonderful. Make sure that you spend a little time wandering around the grounds.
I have been to the Mansion many times and love it every time .. It's huge and interesting to go back in time .. The grounds are wonderful to see also. It's a must see if you come tomduluth .
As first a tourist of this city, and now a resident. Glensheen is a must. I always enjoy the tour. An incredibly unique step back in time. Go big or go home and do the expanded tour... You won't regret it!
I did the expanded tour when the house was decorated for Christmas. The tour was fantastic and very informative. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the house and the family. Since it is the winter there wasn't much benefit of touring the grounds. The house was nicely decorated but honestly I expected it to be more elaborately decorated but what was there was very pretty. We did the last tour of the day and found that to be nice. Our guide didn't rush at all.
Very interesting and educational how advanced this mansion was for it's time. I wouldn't mind some of the features in my own home...
I've been to Glensheen Mansion multiple times throughout my life. And in the times that I had visited I had only done the grounds & main tour. The last time my family & I visited Duluth we stopped by Glensheen Mansion and we decided to do the expanded tour, which includes the grounds the main part of the house the upper floors, the attic, & the basement.( this tour took us about 2- 3 1/2 hrs. FYI) It's a little expensive, but I highly recommend this tour to anyone that loves a little history. It is quite informative & a visual treat as you tour through truly amazing architecture of the Mansion, it's like stepping back into another time. In case you were wondering...Yes, you are allowed to take photographs, just no flash photography is allowed. (there was only one room in the whole Mansion that we weren't allowed to take photographs in & it was due to some water damage the Mansion had suffered from a bad storm.)The staff is friendly & willing to answer your questions. But if you are inquiring about the murders that took place at Glensheen, the staff refuses to discuss any details of the murders that took place on the property, but yet you can buy a book about it in the gift shop. Go figure...
Very impressive estate as you drive up to it. I was interested until I found out the price of the tours. Very expensive to learn history about someone I have never heard of or cared to learn about.
From the home, to the grounds, to fabulous views of Lake Superior, this is a fabulous way to spend a summer afternoon in Duluth! You have to ASK for the murder/ghost story, but if you do, they will tell you!
