Simply stated, a classy place to visit as a tourist, and it's still a functioning entity. The clicking sound of looms is beautifully hypnotic...when they are operating.
For people looking for an authentic souvenir from their visit to Amana or Iowa, this is a good choice. You can find a wonderful blanket/throw, or pick from mittens & gloves. In particular I will remember the time I brought my niece to Winterfest here, but she forgot to bring her gloves. One quick stop by the woolen mill, and we were ready to have fun the rest of the day!
This place was really neat from a historical standpoint but also the offerings of product for people who sew, stitch, etc. They had everything under the sun and what seemed to me at very fair prices. I could see some people spending hours in here.
Very nice..had woolen show going on with alot of crafters thereGit some Christmas shopping done..all of amana colonies is great
The mill is part museum and mill store. The merchandise is beautiful and some are handmade. They are not inexpensive; but a bargain because of the quality.
it was interesting to learn about how the mill used to operate. there is a video that plays in the original part of the mill that tells the history of the mill. they still make blankets and throws there - but that is about all. most of those items seemed to be cotton rather than wool, though. you can still see them working on the items in the back of the building, but it is certainly not exciting! somewhat disappointing. the items for sale seemed to be rather expensive, too!
We visited the woolen mill yesterday hoping to buy a genuine Amana-made item. They had many very high quality blankets to choose from that were made there but the majority of the store has premium priced clothing, which I'd be willing to pay knowing where/how it was made. You can imagine my disappointment then when the first item I found interest in was made in China. That prompted me to start checking tags and of the 10 or so items I checked, ALL of them were made in China. No thanks. I can get that anywhere and pay much less.
I have been going to the Amana colonies for longer than I would like to admit to and the Woolen Mill was once a great place to visit and get great deals on Amana made clothing however lately it seems that most of the item for sale there have been made someplace else. The Woolen Mills is worth the visit, but not so sure about my family making any more return visits.

This stop was very interesting, one of the few wool mills you will see in the US that is still in operation. They also have some good bargain's from time to time.
Cotton blankets sold as irregulars -- good value, but limited selection, based on what is available. Interesting exhibit on weaving.
The machines don't seem to run much, but there are lots of clothes, blankets to purchase. At a not very reasonable price though. It isn't much more interesting than a regular clothes shop
The day we visited the looms were not running. It was just a shop for their wares. I would think that a tourist site would be up and running on all days for people to see how things work and are made.
My wife and I shopped at this mill and got to see the machinery in action making woolen blankets. We got a nice throw for ourselves and one for our daughter and here fiancé. Be ready to spent a bit of cash or plastic in this shop though. However very high quality merchandise.
A very nice video on the day we were there. Lots of clothing and blankets of wool and cotton made at the mill.
