Credit Island used to be a nice park with a great beginners golf course. That is all in the past. The park is completely submerged every spring due to the Mississippi River flooding. Now it is a decent place to enjoy a wooded surrounding, but not much else.
I grew up in this area, and this park used to be a family favorite. Now with low funding, the city has pretty much given up on it. There are swings for kids, a frisbee golf course, fishing and other activities, but things have gotten run down. If you want to have a family picnic June to October, it is ok but not great.
We always enjoy a drive around the island. There is always something to see and during the cold winter months it's fun to look for Eagles roosted in the trees along the drive. This can be a prime location for Eagle watching so bring your camera or binoculars. Another great viewing area is the open water by Lock and Dam 15, the largest Roller Dam in the world where you can see Eagles fishing. Other birds are frequently seen in the waters around the island including ducks, geese, pelicans, herons and egrets to name a few. Activities during warmer months on the island include Disc Golf, softball, picnics, kayaking or canoeing around the island, fishing and biking. We particularly enjoy biking around the island during summer as an extension to the the riverfront bike trail starting from Bettendorf. It makes for a nice 14 mile round trip. The bike bridge to the mainland has been a nice addition and we look forward to the continuing improvements to the bike trail. The old Credit Island Lodge is being restored after being gutted by fire and the city has made a significant investment in the park which bodes well for the future.
Around Christmas, the park attracts bald eagles from all over the area and you can watch them feed off of fish they catch in the Mississippi. There is ample parking around the island and many places where you can picnic.
Credit Island is a wonderful eagle watching spot in the winter. Please get out of your car in order to hear the haunting call of the eagle, it's almost a cackle-nothing like the screeching hawk sound. I've read the other reviews about the park not being the safest. My advice is to be cautious, however, this park is too nice to not visit.
We enjoyed the native plants, surrounded by the Mississippi River, walking on the Credit Island Bridge, and seeing a large flock of white pelicans and herons, the large sculpture of "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte," and especially the informative markers that told about the island's history, the mammals and waterfowl.
Wanted to walk at this beautifully located park alongside the Missippi, but after a few hundred feet the mozzies attacked! Without insect repellant had no choice but to drive around and then away! Don't forget the repellant!
there is good fishing here beautiful views of the river not to mention the bird watching i would highly recommend i just wish they wouldnt have gotten rid of the golf course i kind of miss it
In the winter months, Credit Island is known for eagle viewing. In spring...and right now and all through April...the American White Pelican migrates here on its way north. There are literally hundreds in the wetland spillovers from the Mississippi that are on the island. These huge white birds with knobs on their beaks and feather-tufted heads are beautiful to see. The island is easy to get to heading west of Davenport on West River Road. There is a sign that can't be missed.A side note: Another great place to view the pelicans is at Lock/Dam 14 as you head out of Davenport on Rt. 67. Go through Bettendorf on 67 and there will be a sign for the lock and dam. Hundreds of pelicans are here, too.
A little something for everyone! Harbor side of the park was filled with Pelicans, geese, ducks, herons. The river side had some people in fishing boats, kayaks, and even some one Kite surfing on the river, disc golfers, kids playing on the army tank and playground, people walking their dogs and fishing off the banks of the Mississippi River. There were bicyclist, nature hikers, walkers, classic cars cruzin' around, motorcyclist, the park was full of people enjoying a laid back Sunday. You almost forget you are in the city, although there is a great view of downtown Davenport from the banks of the Island.
Heard that there were quite a few Bald Eagles in the area. Went to see for myself. Wow! Saw at least 30 of out National Symbol! Simple awesome! If your area this time of year don't miss this! As an added bonus saw lots of Canadian Geese and Mallard Ducks!
Credit IslandIs one of the few island that you are able to drive to.It has a nice paved road around the island with picnic tables and place to fish or just watch the river and wild life. There are ball diamonds and basket courts and a playground for the little ones. There is a nine hole golf course but the lodge was destroyed by fire last spring and it is hoped it will be re-build by this spring. If you are in the Quad Cities this is a good place to spend a afternoon.
This is a great park for bike riding, fishing, walking, running (2.6 mile paved loop), disc golf, bird watching, and just relaxing. It is a family friendly park. The lodge is under repair, but that should be done by spring of 2014. When the leaves change color, this is the best place to be.
They had their statues from the painting of Sunday in the Park. I understand they just repainted them all. Such a delight to see them out again.
I lived on credit island as a child, my father was the greenskeeper, and as such we lived on the park in the large building next to the tennis courts, at that time there was a connecting wall to enclose the area that housed the machinery they used to maintain the golf course, forming a huge courtyard where me and my siblings used to play. I was 9 years old when we moved there from a house on sturdevant street just north of Marycrest coledge on top of the hill. I have many memories of how it used to look, as children we had the run of the park with all the slides and swings, ice skateing in the winter and warming ourselves by the pot belly stove in the pavilion by the lagoon. Almost every year it flooded and causeway went under water and the island became a island again, I remember having to take a boat to go to school during those times. My Father who was the superentendant of the work crews drove the tank onto the island where it now sits, he knew how to since he was a tanker in the army during ww2 he then welded the hatchs shut so kids could not get in and maybe get hurt, God only knows how many kids have played on that tank since that day back in 1959 it was a great experience living on the park a unique one for sure.
