Too cold this trip. We will definately visit again and check out the trail. It goes through many miles of terrain with different events skirting town.
Start at mile 12 and work your way backwards. The trail has some steep hills from mile 8 to 12. The gentleman at the bike shop where we rented bikes suggested it was best to do the hills at first before we had peddled a lot. That turned out to be great advice. The views of the Iowa countryside and the town of Decorah are beautiful. It reminded me of Tuscany. We rented bikes at the Decorah Bike on College Drive (just west of Water Street). The staff was very helpful and the shop is almost at the head of the trial.
The trail follows the rider from downtown, along the river and to the Fish Hatchery. On a Friday in October, mid-morning, we saw no other person on the trial. It was most pleasant. and a Decorah pride.
Most Iowa bike trails are rail-to-trail conversions, which means they are long and straight, with minimal changes in grade. Trout Run Trail winds through the hills and river valleys of NE Iowa and gives the rider a pleasant combination of flat, timbered riding and some challenging hill work with switchbacks that provide beautiful views of the surrounding area. It's only 11 miles, but provides a good workout! There are other bike trails in the area if you want a longer route. Ask at the visitor center or one of the local bike shops for details.
I have ridden most trails in Iowa and this is my favorite. There is great diversity, and many hills, but it is doable for even older folks with a granny gear. A truly beautiful trail.
and stopped to look around. It must have been at least 30 years since we were out here. We forgot how nice a place this is. many things to do - watch the falls, fish, picnic, or just sit and rest. Nice place to spend a few hours away from everything.
My husband and I rented a tandem and enjoyed this beautiful trail. The small hills create gorgeous views of the country side. There are wildflowers lining the trails and plenty of places to stop and enjoy the views. The trail is well marked and is well maintained. I wish it was longer (11 miles) but overall is a great place for a short ride!
We really liked the challenge of the hills (we don't have many hills where we live). The trail was clean and free from debris. There were a few places where better signage could be useful, but overall there was really no chance of getting lost. Can't wait to return in a few weeks.
We walked parts of this trail during our visit to Decorah. It is a wonderful trail to hike or bike. We met folks along the way who gave a friendly "hi" and it sure was pleasant to experience. Don't miss this if you like to walk.
Many miles a great biking trail and walking trail. Through farmland, town and over trout streams. This trail also passes under two eagle nest.
I am a runner so the concrete/black top trail surface is not totally to my liking, but it is wide and sufficient to share with bicyclists and walkers. The trail circumnavigates the city of Decorah and is 11 miles in length. I was on the "easy half", but found the sights interesting. The downtown to the Fish Hatchery is pretty flat but is right next to water (a river then a stream). The Decorah eagles hang out around the fish hatchery, so while running in the morning, I saw them flying. My wife and I walked some of that trail and were able to see the eagles nests and the adult eagles perched in a tree. I have seen some of the rest of the trail from the road, and will look forward to running that next time. There are maps of the trail available at the information center...get one so you know where water fountains and rest rooms are.
This 11 mike loop trail covers a lot of fun territory - the eagle cam, the fish hatchery, a new lit bridge and switchbacks galore. This was a very pleasant way to get acquainted with Decorah.
The trail is wonderful. Slightly over 11 miles around, with some nice climbs, wonderful views, and the Decorah Eagles (http://www.ustream.tv/decoraheagles) as well as the fish hatchery and several easy access points to downtown Decorah. Stop and Decorah Bicycles to get your biking gear and Whippy Dip to get your ice cream fix.
We biked the Trout Run Trail during a recent visit to Decorah, and commend the community for providing such a lovely trail for the residents and visitors. It has a nice combination of easy stretches as well as challenging hills, with most of the trail winding through the scenic outer ring of the city. We saw lots of local folks taking advantage of this great resource.
Beautiful place to go for a walk or hike with your dogs. People were also biking and very courteous to those walking. Also, some great places to take photos.
