Carnegie-Stout was recently remodeled to its former glory and the job was well done. This is a beautiful building! If you are looking for historical information, walk up the steps into the "old/new" section and prepare yourself for great help. Microfilm of old newspapers of the city back to the 1850s are available along with a fantastic vertical file of information. There are hundreds of books about Dubuque and Iowa too. The staff will guide you along and answer questions all day long. They are wonderful.
This beautiful and historic building houses an excellent collection, provides great service, and offers alot of special events. We attend movie nights, book discussion groups, and classes on tech devices. The Ancestry database is great for amateur geneologists, and Universal Class offers interesting free online learning opportunities. They also have programs allowing limited music downloads and a good range of e-books. Various reading programs incentivize both kids and adults. Computers and wireless network are available for those without internet access. I also enjoy their DVD movie and TV series selections.
The space is excellent. It's a feel good place to be. The art exhibits are wonderful. I love the magazine collection.
Nice library, but I took a child there recently and we couldn't get anyone to help us with a tour or locate what we had in mind
This is a great place to find any media you are looking for, not just books. There is a surprising amount of dvd's and tv serieses to rent. They also have a friendly site where you can hold books, manage your materials and see what's new.
I regularly visit thr Carnegie-Stout, it is one of the finest public libraries in the Midwest. I find working in the restored original library uplifting and inspirational.
Beautiful collection and extensive information of Iowa History and Genealogy. Has new children and teen reading areas.
Many of these older libraries are being replaced by multimedia extravagances. This library has been preserved both inside and out and is obviously a cornerstone of the urban neighborhood where it is situated. It is a great place to catch one's breath.
The Carnegie-Stout Library is a full-service modern library, tastefully restored within the historic library building originally funded by the Carnegie program. The physical collection of books, cds, dvds and other materials is good, in terms of quantity, quality, display and layout. The spaces are bright and comfortable, and there are stately quiet places to read and study, as well as social areas for groups to meet. The kids area has kid-scale seating for kids to spend quality time with family and friends accessing library materials. The library programs are wide in diversity, from book clubs and educational classes to kids day programs, movie showings, and tours. The library has most modern electronic features, including high speed internet, computers for use, and ability to check-out e-books on any device.
Wonderful renovation honored the best of the past with the technology and services of a modern library. The art and local artist exhibits were outstanding. The adult, teen and children's sections were superb. The library has great energy, light, and ease of navigation.
The library has gone through some incredible construction to update their facility while keeping some of the history to the building. It looks amazing! It is organized well - something for everyone. It's too bad it couldn't be moved to a better neighborhood! Lock your car doors!
Have been to both children and adult programs at this library. They do a super job. We attended a couple of the free adult movies, most recently THE MONUMENTS MEN. Standing room only attendance for good reason - free refreshments provided - popcorn, pop, water. An inexpensive, social opportunity for movie goers...fun...My 3-year-old grandson loves the toddler story time - finger plays, stories, simple group games. A great learning opportunity. And if you check out their website, the programs for all ages are amazing --something for everyone in your house.
This newly-renovated library provides full service to the Dubuque area, with a wide range of services and staff. There is a splendid children's area with books divided by age group and a large story area. There is a divided area for young adults and teens with computers and books for their age group. There is a large manga and graphic novel section. There's an extensive periodical collection, DVD collection, music collection; there is a fine collection of fiction for adults as well as non-fiction. There are two active information/references desks. There are meeting rooms, activity rooms, study rooms, work rooms. There is an active Website from which you can Interlibrary Loan, order books for pickup, manage your account, renew books, check out ebooks, access the card catalog, use reference materials. And the building is filled with history and art; it is a beautiful structure renovated in the past few years to expose its beautiful historic rotunda, skylight and glass stack floors. The building itself is breath-taking and you should take a trip to see it. Truly a gem for Dubuque.
My wife and I attended one of the many varied education presentations offered by the library staff and community volunteers for both children and adults. Entering this library is like entering an old city train station with its expansive high ceiling interior appointed with much carved oak trim and bookcases. There is an atmosphere of respect for education through traditional booksalthough the library is certainly up to speed with technology and their computer classes. My wife and I also enjoyed just looking around and enjoying the artwork on display after our presentation. It is a nice place to take children so they can enjoy what going to a library was like years ago, and should be like now.
The library is nice, lots of interesting things to look at. The old wood on the staircase, was amazing. It is a really wonderful place to visit. If you like old buildings, go see this. The bookcases are oak, the doors are a gorgeous ornate oak. I liked looking at the building. I took my grandson, and he enjoyed it, too. The children's area is very nice, lots for kids to do, toys, books, tables, etc. They also have computers they can use. It is a nice place to visit. Sincerely, Carolyn H
