We took a different road to Madrid and saw the sign for the winery and decided to see if it was still open. We arrived 15 min prior to close and they had no problem with it! 6 free samples later we bought a case. What a great little find & great wine too!
This is a winery which is literally in the middle of an Iowa corn field. The Sunday we visited, they had a great live band performing. There was a big lawn with plenty of lawn chairs where families can enjoy wine, snacks and great music. There is also three levels of seating attached to the winery with views of the band as well. I was surprised at the number of families visiting, especially with small children and babies (don't worry, music is plenty loud and there is plenty of space for kids to play and babies to do their thing). The winery offers 6 free wine sampling. The wine is better than average and not too expensive. Wait staff was reasonably friendly and patient. I highly recommend a visit.
A beautiful winery, love the tasting room.We were greeted add we walked in on Friday afternoon. Had the place to ourselves. Very informational hostess presenting our wine tasting. Many good wines to choose from, some for every palate. Hope to get back to experiencea live music Friday night.
Was not going to put in a review but felt others needed to know as they do not share this info. Arrived on Sunday around 4, after ridung the trail, to taste then enjoy some new wine. Did not get to, they may be open till 6 but they quit tastings at 4. Of course I could buy a glass to try it but the thought of spending money on something I might not like is not how I want to spend my hard earned cash. So I took my money and left. Will lot return and will let anyone I hear about coming to this area of thid.
Great afternoon at Snus Winery on Sunday, August 3rd. The band was a fun mix of 60's and 70's music, there was dancing, drinking, and eating. Although I didn't partake in the barbque that was available at the winery it did look very good. We were able to do a short tasting and after 3 I had found the one for me "Spinna", sweet and fruity. Can't wait to go back, all ages are welcomed.
Enjoying a sunny Sunday afternoon at Snus Hill is one of my favorite summer activities. They have a nice selection of bands throughout the summer months and the wine is decent. The yard has huge mature trees, so there is never a problem finding a shady spot to sit and there are always plenty of chairs. Feel free to bring in your own snacks, but don't expect to find a small table to put them on. Those go quickly and there aren't enough to go around. All in all, you will find Snus Hill to be relaxing and enjoyable.
This is a great place for a family gathering or to meet a few friends. No need to bring tables or chairs cause the winery provides plenty. You can bring all your own food. ...or buy sandwiches there...and your own soft drinks. The wine is excellent. Not sure where the first two bad reviewers are coming from....bad service??? In what way....you serve yourself...its not a restaurant. ..you get your wine and get a table. ..duh. staff is friendly...a nice place to spend a Friday evening or Sunday afternoon.
Went back to Snus after Chris insisted that previous issues were taken care of. I actually feel set up as once we arrived Chris was beyond rude to us. He was insultive. I wont return. The wines are getting worse every year anyway.
This winery has extremely poor customer service. We went there in August as a repeat trip to the winery. They do not treat repeat customers with respect at all. The owner in fact was inebriated half of the time. In fact, they treat the repeat customers like they shouldn't be there. Its great if you are a first timer, but if you go back they treat you like you should go elsewhere and they are bothered by you. We were snubbed for being there. Wine really isn't that good either. When I complained regarding this, I got told that I don't run a winery myself so I have no business telling him how to run his. Not a great way to get me to go back. Be careful at this one.
Outside - beautiful country setting...Live music and wine....fun, family, dancing. Great wine - they sell by the bottle...everything is Kitty themed....the Catnip wine is a personal favorite of mine!! Reasonably priced...Great music - the night we went it was 60's, 70's, and 80's. Chairs provided or you can bring your own. Family friendly - you can bring a picnic basket with goodies - really a fun time on a beautiful evening. I believe they also do Sunday afternoons....
I already knew I loved Snus Hill wines. I already knew the property was beautiful and well cared for and they have a fantastic friendly staff. I even knew the bands they have (twice a week in the summers - no cover!) are fun and vary in style to fit about anyone's taste. What I didn't know is how beautifully they put all this together for weddings! A family member had her reception there and everything ran like clockwork. Bravo!
Thank you for bringing your friends out for a visit! We hope you sent one of your bottles of Kitten home with them! :)
I was looking for something to do on a Sunday afternoon and this showed up on Ames' events calendar- boy I'm glad it did. Not only does this winery have a great selection of wines, it is a great venue. They had live music and a great seating area. The wine tasting was nice and our hostess was able to answer a lot of questions about the wines (AND was generous with her pours). Everyone there seemed to be having a good time and I look forward to going back sometime.
Attended a wedding and reception that followed at the Snus Hill Winery, Madrid, Ia. In anticipation of the drive over from the town of Boone, Ia, we went to the winery the day before. Oh my, it was quite an experience. The property is beautiful, inside and out. I participated in an afternoon of delight. Connie, took the three of us for an excellent adventure through the various award winning wines, grown, aged, and bottled on the property. Connie was knowledgeable and could describe each of the wines and presented them in excellent fashion. For an enjoyable experience and an opportunity to purchase reasonably priced PREMIUM wines, visit Snus Hill Winery. It was a memorable trip!!!
We had a wedding at the Snus Hill Winery in Nov. 2012. The staff was remarkable and so accommodating. The facility was perfect for our celebration. We had the rehearsal dinner there on Friday evening as well as the wedding ceremony, dinner reception and dance on Saturday afternoon/evening. Their upper level has lots of tables, chairs, wine themed decorations and windows that provide great views of the countryside. Great facilities for the caterer and lots of great places for photo opportunities on the property. The staff we worked with (Sasha and Diane) were professional and extremely helpful. The wine is also EXCELLENT!! The only negative (if it is one) is that the winery is located about a mile down a gravel road. I highly recommend Snus Hill for any celebration.
