They used to have tubing which was a lot of fun as well but they have been closed for years now which is sad but they still have races in the summer.
News flash. They are closed
After coming out of a several week deep freeze here in Iowa, the temps rose above zero and we decided to get some fresh air. We thought we'd try a shot at Fun Valley. Some apprehension before, reinforced more when driving west of Montezuma we thought we were in Nebraska, really flat. Turned south and we were on a gravel road. We turned into the driveway for Fun Valley and were taken aback a little. This is definitely a small ski area, but actually very nice. If you are going to ski, the hills were very well groomed. They have a couple of chair lifts. The runs are expectedly short, but they have some variation and a nice drop. It would be a good place to learn/warm up before heading out to Colorado or wherever. They have a nice little concession area, reasonable prices, plenty of room. We didn't ski. We were interested in the tubing. This was our first time here and we had a wonderful time. There were plenty of tubes, various sizes. The tow rope worked great for this. They had 4 lanes set up, about 8-10 feet wide with a nice buildup side rail of snow. I was actually amazed as to the amount of speed two old people could attain in going down the hill. It is a nice long, fast ride to the bottom. The tow can move people fairly quickly up to the top. I would highly recommend this for something to do during the winter here in Iowa.
My friends and I have recently checked out a new ski resort that is located only an hour East of Des Moines, right off of I-80. Fun Valley Ski Area is quite unique, and unlike any other ski resort I have visited in that it not only offers skiing and snowboarding slopes, but also DOWNHILL TUBING!!! I am no experienced skier or snowboarder, and although it is fun attempting to conquer the hills, I found myself amazed and overwhelmed simply by the tubing slopes. The price also made it tempting since it was only $7 .00 for an hour, however, we paid $12.00 for the two hours. Another thing about this ski resort that I really enjoyed was the fact that they have music playing outside daily that you can hear while you are taking in all the fun. Some of us were tubing, while others were skiing, and yet others snowboarding, so we all decided to meet at the lounge to visit the snack bar. The had quite a range of items, including pizza, burgers, nachos, chips, candy, hot chocolate, and cinnamon rolls. Honestly, the food was amazing, however when we return we decided we are going to take advantage of the option of bringing your own food/beverages because they were a bit pricey. After visiting Fun Valley Ski Area, it sticks out a little more then other ski resorts and is tempting to return to due to the new attraction of snow tubing!!!
