Stopped here and really enjoyed our tour and the samples. We are cheese lovers and especially love the Blue. The stop is worth it for the history lesson, but the samples are so good. The facility is immaculately clean. It is a short tour so you won't have to spend your whole day. A good place to stop and learn about Maytag cheese and a bit about the connection to the appliance company. Our tour guide was fabulous, I am sorry I did not her name, Saturday 2/14. She made our tour fun and told some history of the area and others places to see.
Very cool way to spend an hour or so. This place knows how to treat guests. Upon arrival, we were greated kindly and watched a 10-15 minute video on the history of Maytag Dairy Farm. We then were escorted around the packing and shipping operation. Maytag's care and craftsmanship is exemplified even in the wrapping and packaging of each morsel of cheese. The visit was ended with a very extensive and GENEROUS tasting...We left with a day's pay worth of cheese! Thanks, Matag!
I met a woman on the airplane from ORD to PNS whose husband was a bleu cheese aficionado and she turned me on to Maytag. I ordered presents for our son and son-in-law and they received very good reviews. I like the service-and the presentation. The bleu cheese was EXCELLENT!
What a great place ! This is where the famous bleu cheese is made ! They have a greeting area with products that you can purchase. Take the time to view the movie that chronicles the history of the Maytag family (15 minutes). Then they will show you where they package the cheese. The cheese is aged down the road in caves. The people are extremely friendly.Make sure you get some bleu and/or their other selections.Better than any I have had. They have a websire where you can order online too !
Very efficient & courteous. Actually contacted me about my shipment because the were concerned about the weather. It arrived the next day & was perfect.
After living where we do, for 4 years now, and being in Newton atleast once a week, my husband and I had never taken the time to check out the Maytag Dairy! Finally, on Friday, August 1, we decided "we were going" - and what a great visit we had in the visitor center/showroom! We were met by a very friendly and outgoing lady, who offered to show us around. First, we watched a 12-minute video about the earlier days of Maytag Farms and then she showed us the packaging/shipping areas. What impressed us the most, was that in these times of automation and high speed mechanics, 99% of everything in this cheese making process, is still done BY HAND. We were able to watch an employee wrap each individual wedge of bleu cheese and how it is made into the wheel. Our guide also told us about the caves at the original farm just down the road! Once back into the showroom, she gave us samples of the bleu cheese, which is the only cheese still made at this site, and a sample of the Edam cheese. For someone who doesn't typically care for bleu cheese, I found this particular brand, to be very smooth and not pungent. We did purchase a wedge, a brick and a crock of cheese, with prices being typical of craft cheeses! Trust me...we will NOT take this place for granted anymore!
It was a beautiful day. The corn looked spectacular and the blue cheese was delicious. While they distribute other cheeses, the only product they make is the Maytag Bleu Cheese, and it was nice the see the original farm just down the road We bought a 2# Wheel
If you love blue cheese, traveling to Newton, Iowa and out to the Maytag Dairy is a must. Maytag Dairy is the home of the world famous Maytag blue cheese. This is the best cheese and the tour is very interesting. Getting to taste a variety of products is wonderful and of course, purchasing some of the blue cheese. It is a yummy tour!
Fabulous service; the best bleu cheese on the planet. We have a standing order to be shipped every quarter!!
But this really isn't a great attraction. It's not worth the drive off 80. The people are nice but there's not much to see.
The people at Maytag Dairy Farm were so nice to talk to and they gave us samples of cheese to try. Of course, we had to purchase cheese to take home. I have to say that coming from Vermont, we are very fussy about cheese. I loved the cheddar spread and made sure that I got some to bring home to share.
We have lived in Newton for nearly thirteen years, and the Dairy Farm is a regular stop for us. Part of that is because we know some of the people who work there, but most of it is because we keep showing guests this gem of the prairie. Don't confuse the Dairy Farm with the now defunct Maytag Corporation (appliances bearing the Maytag name are rebadged Whirlpools). A member of the family began the enterprise on open land northwest of the city many years ago and operated it as sort of a hobby for a while. But word got out, and now the Farm is well-established. Well it might be, for the blue cheese, in particular, is wonderful. They have it in a variety of packages, none of them cheap. Spring for it and take it home (it keeps surprisingly well without refrigeration, though you should use an icebox whenever you can). They have other kinds of cheese, too, but none are as good as the made-in-Newton blue cheese. You will be greeted warmly, as others have noted. There is a video, and some tours are available. If you will be eating in restaurants in or near Newton, watch for burgers prepared with Maytag Blue Cheese--scrumptious, and miles above Burger King or Mac's.
We stopped on a Saturday morning and received a very pleasant welcome from one of the 3 or 4 people working there. After watching a short (~10 minute) video, we got a tour of their facility. Although the tour only consisted of watching a person INDIVIDUALLY wrap each small wedge of their famous Blue Cheese, we did get a great background of how it all started with a small herd of Maytag Holstein-Friesian.The current President of Maytag Farms, Myrna Ver Ploeg, happened to also be there and couldn't have been more personable! She told us more about the history and how the desk in her office was made using reclaimed wood from one of the original barns on the farm.At the end, don't forget to sample their great cheeses, as they do make more than just the famous Blue Cheese. The Edam is excellent, followed by the extra sharp and yellow cheddars. If you are in the area or just passing through, stopping by for an hour or so is definitely worth it.
We were killing time near Newton and were told to go here, at first I thought no thanks I've seen many dairy barns. I am glad we gave this a chance! My kids loved it , VERY nice lady we had giving us our tour. Interesting, fun, informative, free and samples of all the cheeses ! Worth the stop. We liked it so much we left with $60 of cheese ! Go to the office for the tour not the barn.
For many years we have enjoyed Maytag Blue Cheese, generally considered "America's Premier Blue Cheese." While planning a trip across Iowa on Highway I-80, I noticed that we would be very near the Maytag Farm in Newton and it became a "Don't Miss Attraction" for us.Upon arriving at the Maytag Store, we were warmly greeted by Linda who gave us a deluxe tour of the Maytag store, offices, wrapping room, and shipping area. The tour also included a 10-15 minute video about the history of Maytag Blue Cheese. It concluded back in the store with the opportunity to sample from a nice selection of blue cheese in various forms and other cheeses. For the first time, we were introduced to blue cheese and honey on crackers, a perfect blend of flavors for us and a treat we are now enjoying at home. Our tour lasted about 75 minutes, including the extra time we spent in the store. We found the tour to be very interesting. Thank you, Linda, for making it so enjoyable. The cheese samples were delicious and an unexpected "tour bonus" for us. Anyone who enjoys interesting "factory tours," especially ones that include sampling products at the end of the tour, will greatly enjoy a visit to Maytag Farms.
