This is one bizarre musical, but we laughed and found it to be quite entertaining. The college students did a great job - it was opening night when we attended. It was my first experience with the Okoboji Summer Theater - I would certainly go again. The building looked like it was taken care of. But I do think it might not be very comfortable for a heavy person sitting in these very traditional theater seats if he or she has someone sitting on both sides of them. There was an intermission. We did not get up and move around during the intermission, but I would recommend that you do so. Towards the end of the production I was getting just a bit antsy, but that was because I had sat too long and didn't take advantage of getting up during intermission as expressed above.Attending the production was a nice change of pace while visiting the area for a week. The only other recommendation might be to try to get seats towards the end of the row -I think they would be better than middle seats and having to get up and get around the people in your row especially during the middle of the show.
We went to Patsy Cline production two nights ago. It was fantastic!! This was our first time here. We enjoyed every minute of it, the show was sold out. We hope to come back again. The staff was friendly. The singing was professional quality. Seats were small to average size. A big guy would not be comfortable. However the length of the performance was just right. Not too long, but long enough. Hit Goodies Candies across the street for a terrific truffle at a small price. Recommended lemon creme.
We go here every year when we go to the lakes. The shows are unique. Very quaint theater. Friendly staff of students. Quality acting and overall college production. This is a nice break from bars and boats while on vacation.
The students, from Stephens and the professionals, from across the country are amazing. We saw The Fox and the Fairway. The cast was incredibly talented. The set was amazing. We had a great time. This was our 2nd visit. We will visit again!
I've attended a number of shows here over the years and have never been disappointed. Considering it is students and some professional players, the quality is quite good. Improvements to the facility over the years have enhanced the experience as well. A nice change of pace from the typical Okoboji pursuits.
The students from Stephens College produce some excellent performances each summer here at the Iowa Great Lakes. Besides the students, there are often professional actors in the productions. Some of the former students have gone on and attained recognition as professional actors. When my husband and I first started attending these perfomances, Stephens was an all-girl college and the girls who were ushers dressed very professionally. Currently, the attire is very casual. This theatre provides visitors and residents alike an enjoyable evening of entertainment, from comedy to drama in a comfortable, casual setting.
This is a very relaxing place to watch a great show! The building is some what older but I great shape! You will feel at home here!
If you are a summer visitor to Lake Okoboji and enjoy quality theatre, then a visit or two (or three) to the Okoboji Summer Theatre is a must. Staffed by professional performers and students from the nationally acclaimed theatre department at Stephens College, the performances are stellar. We were in Okoboji for two weeks in July 2013 and saw three productions: MY WAY: FRANK SINATRA TRIBUTE; I HATE HAMLET; THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST; and the youth production of JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH. The production quality of all four shows were top notch. This is NOT your run-of-the-mill community theatre fare. These performers will delight you, and the change of pace from amusement parks and boating that a night at the theatre provides is part of Okoboji's charm.
We just returned from seeing the Drowsy Chaperone a the Okoboji Summer Theatre. It's hard to believe that the majority of the cast are still in school, they were awesome! This play was so entertaining and well acted, we will go back to Okoboji next year just to see another production. A definite must see!
What a joy! Excellent live theater. We saw The Drowsy Chaperone, August 2013, and it was wonderful. An excellent place for students to hone their craft with professional guidance. Congratulations for a lasting theater program that never fails to impress. Lucky Okobojians!
For a very nominal cost, one can enjoy live theater with a cast of interns from Stephens College plus professionals from New York and other cities. There are a variety of shows from which to choose from and most are family friendly. This is the 56th season and if you are lucky enough to get a ticket, GO! You will enjoy it! It is hard to believe students can produce such professional programs.
We saw the opening performance of "Bingo, the winning musical" on Tuesday night. The performance was fun and interactive. The cast had mostly great voices. Especially liked Shinah Brashears. A great talent!
The shows are put on by a summer stock group of students and professionals. This gives the locals great theater and the students great experience at a reasonable price.
