For any true Star Trek fan, you'll know that Captain James T. Kirk will be born in Riverside, IA in the year 2228. To honor this future fictional character, the town has erected a monument in his honor, commemorating the future birthplace of the original Star Trek captain. It can be a little bit difficult to find. The address to put into your GPS is 51 West 1st Street, Riverside, IA 52327 (Note: This is near where West 1st Street intersects with North Glasgow Street). You'll find here a barber shop painted yellow, and to the side, a stone path. Follow that path to behind that building and you'll find the monument.
but it's funny that it exists. :) Since there's not a whole lot of anything else to see besides corn out in this area, you might as well stop if you're driving by!
Boldly go ......Back behind a very small beauty shop is the 'birthplace' of James T. Kirk. The town embraces their fame, and at the same time does their day to day business as if nothing is special. If you go a few shops down you will find a pub that is said to be the place of conception. There is also a small museum on the curve as you come into downtown Riverside.
It's great to see a small town in the Midwest to have such world wide notoriety. They have their own Enterprise Space Ship. This year June 27 & 28 2014 is the 30th Anniversary of TREK FEST sounds like a fun time to be had.
If you like Star Trek than its for you. We just stopped thru for friends, not really our thing. But if you like that kinda thing than it's probably for you
This stop was just fun and silly. The "marker" is behind a beauty salon. You have to walk between the salon and another building to get to it. There's even a bench there so you can contemplate the future. If you are a Star Trek fan even just a little, this is a fun stop. (The Mexican restaurant across the street is good too.)
I am a born and raised Iowan. Never dreamed this was as fun as it is. The marker for James T Kirk is surprisingly well done. It's in a neat place. I love that people know we take our humor and cinema very seriously in Iowa.
You go there, and nothing is there. The "Trek Fest" is nothing than an excuse to have a demolition derby with a beer tent. If your a Star Trek fan, stay home and watch old re-runs; you will get more out of that.
Irony and plenty of it. Wretched parade with foo frilly geek girls dressed like space trash (do you want me? ... come tell me). Tractors on parade. Hard candy shattering on asphalt tossed by bank employees on shimmering hope-floats. Stick around after the parade for a best-dressed character costume "event", where the geeks preen and fawn to an ironic clapping public (farmers, I. city hipsters). Do you wanna know why all the smart kids moved out of small Iowa towns? Go to Trekfest in Riverside, and shiver at the awesome wonder of the decay.
This town has been designated as the birthplace of Capt. Kirk by the original creator of Star Trek and they have a huge Star Trek Festival every year.
This cannot seriously be a 'destination place'. This entire town is only a place you have to drive through in order to get to the casino.
A fun little side trip if you're in the area and you're a Trekkie. Look for the model of the USS Enterprise parked in front of an old gas station, and then hunt for the monument marking the future birthplace of James T. Kirk. We also visited a great little antique shop nearby, but last time we drove past, we noticed it had shut down. Too bad!
Drove by enough times and decided to stop and look. Waste of time. I like sci-fi and Star Trek, but the area is just run down and not work the visit. If you are in Riverside , check out some of the nice churces, the casino and the golf course.
Not a lot there-- but quirky trekker fun! Pretty typical Iowa small town with friendly gracious people who care for their town and welcome visitors despite the fictional attraction.
Someone put some money into the monument! Go downtown and look for the flag. Stop, getout, go BEHIND the small buidling and get your picture taken with the "shrine" to James T. Kirk. Great side trip.
