It was really cool to visit the Bridges of Madison County.Very relaxing atmosphere:) Gave my Husband and I a much needed weekend getaway.Plan on going back in 2 months.
Me and Joe both love bridges of Madison county movie and book and seeing them in person was so romantic
We first visited Winterset soon after we first saw the movie. It was fresh and enchanting. We've returned several times and always take the time to go out in the country and visit many of the bridges and to relive scenes from the movie. Last summer we went again, on a rainy Sunday just before tornados passed through a bit south of Winterset. Most of the community was closed for Sunday and few people were about. The next time we go, we'll sign up for an organized tour and let someone else do the driving and tell some of the background stories that many townspeople must have to tell. I especially want to visit the restored farmhouse and enjoy its "presence." We have the DVD and watch the movie at least yearly. It keeps your heart tender. I still need to read the book. I'm sure it will enrich the story even more for us.
If you have an SUV or truck...the long gravel road is worth the trek. The bridge was utilized for most of the movie Bridges of Madison County. The bridge can no longer handle vehicles but you can walk thru to the other side. Inside the bridge people have signed all the beams. There is a house next to the bridge accessed via stairs (no accessible)...inside are some artifacts from the movie and items to purchase. Also a picnic table for you to bring a lunch. It is a lovely bridge.
I love this bridge my family doesnt live far from here I have to come everytime I'm in Iowa! There is a gift center never been in it has always been closed when I have been here. Its a dusty drive but so worth it. A lot of history here!
It is a lovely bridge, with accompanyying signs etc with information about the bridge. The gift center is a quaint little place.
Loved walking across each bridge and taking pictures with our family. Would recommend seeing each bridge.
The bridge most often filmed in the movie "The Bridges of Madison County". Lovely, scenic and historic covered bridge. There is a gift shop nearby. Worth the trip on the dusty, gravel road to get there.
It's a covered bridge that you can't drive on anymore and it's off the beaten path. The history is pretty amazing - it's over 130 years old and in good shape. There is a gift shop nearby that was open but we did not go in. Lots of people on the bridge taking pictures, recreating the scenes from the movie. Don't wash your car before going as the gravel roads will coat your car in a fine white powder. And this is only 1 of the bridges and I don't think the primary bridge in the movie - that would be the Hollywell bridge.
I just wish more than six remain intact. The bridges are all lovely in their own right. This one just seems a little extra special. Have visited in winter and summer and both are fabulous.
I spent one day locating and photographing all six of the bridges and have seen the movie at least four times. I especially wanted to see this one as it was featured in the movie. Four of the six are located on narrow gravel roads and there are signs along the way to direct you to the bridges and also back to Winterset if that is where you want to go. When I drove the roads this week, there were no potholes or washboard ridges, they were just rough and so very dusty and that white dust gets into every crack and crevice in the car. I had to wash my car twice the next day before continuing my travels. I am so glad I finally got to see the bridges. I agree with other reviewers about the graffiti on the bridges. Why do people think they have to put their autograph on everything they see.
If you take the time to go to Madison County you should see some of the bridges. It is an interesting bridge. My wife insisted that we see some bridges. The drive to the bridge is nice and the history is worth checking into. We watched the movie when we got home for the first time.
I have always thought the covered bridges would be nice to see. I loved all 6, but feel badly that people don't respect this part of history more. Seems like they think it is their own personal chalk board and have to deface the structure. I know they repaint what they can, but what a shame that you have people that just can't leave something beautiful alone. But it still doesn't take over what a wonderful structure these bridges are. People took pride in their work back in the day and if left alone with some maintenance, it will stand for a long time.
Saw this one before and was worth the second look to show some family members. Had to locate the VHS tape with Clint Eastwood when we got home to share with family...Bridges of Madison County.
I grew up near these bridges, so they dont mean alot to me, but Madison County puts a lot of time and effort into making these bridges worthwhile. I guess I would be impressed on my first visit.
