How does a city as small as Des Moines have a treasure like the Des Moines Symphony? It is truly incredible, and so few people know that so much talent and ability is here! The recent combination of Tony award winner, Audra McDonald, combined with the symphony made for a magical evening. I only wish more combinations like tonight's event would occur, and showcase our Symphony orchestra.
Whatever the Symphony plays, it will sound fabulous. Each performer puts so much of themselves into the show, you know you'll love it. The special New Year's show could not have been better...wonderful music accompanied by wonderful Cirque performers...perfection!
Fabulous! I was invited by a friend. It was a combination of Cirque de Solei preformers and the Des Moines Symphony. I find the Symphony along kind of boring, but this was great!
We have attended many events with the Des Moines Symphony. The musicians are fabulous and they mesh so well with all the special guest artists who come in to perform. It's not boring, it's enlightening. Try it -- (I highly recommend Yankee Doodle Pops, it's free!!)
The Des Moines Symphony is a treat and is wonderful for the Des Moines area. If you love symphony music, you will love the Des Moines Symphony at the beautiful Civic Center in Downtown Des Moines.
Des Moines is a hidden gem of culture, and the symphony is one of those secret treasures. The instrumentalists are seasoned professionals, adept at many schools of music: classical, baroque, romantic, and contemporary. The conductor truly understands music theory and creates a well rounded performance. Ticket prices are actually fairly reasonable, too, especially for a symphony.
We thoroughly enjoyed the Des Moines Symphony's performance of George and Ira Gershwin's music. What a great evening. The symphony is very good - great sound. They worked great with the visiting performers. The use of the large video screen - showing pictures of the Gershwins and showing the keyboard skills of the pianist was great. It was a great aid for those of us sitting far from the stage. Even though we were sitting in row EE, the sound and sights were great.
If you are not a symphony fan, you might find the New Years Eve concert to be a way 'in'. The Symphony always invites a pop-type group and the Symphony provides back-up. We've seen many of their 'normal' concerts as well...but the New Years Eve concert has become a tradition for us. The only downside to a wonderful night is that Civic Center was built to squish as many people in as small a space as possible, so prepare for narrow seats and narrow spaces between you and the next row. We always check our coats for $2 to alleviate the problem of not having a place to put them while in the show.
The Des Moines symphony has the sound of any symphony you'd hear around the world! The conductor has been conducting for 25 years . . . and you can tell by the qualilty of the sound. Absolutely fantastic concerts for the money and for a smaller venue like Des Moines. A perfect add-in for a visit to Des Moines.
The Des Moines Symphony is a wonderful conglomeration of very talented artists. The director, Joseph Guinta is a master with the baton. The symphony performs at the Des Moines Civic Center. They have a season of 8-10 performances during the year, including the Pops performance on the Capital grounds every 4th of July. They provide a powerful classical experience for all! Enjoy!
For a city of Des Moines' size, we are fortunate to have a symphony of such quality. At the concert I attended, they played the Grieg Piano Concerto, with guest pianist Joyce Yang, and Mahler 5. What a fun evening.
Don't miss it. The concert season is always a highlight of the year. Sit as close to the front as you can afford. The Orchestra works very hard to put on a great performance. You will want to come back.
We were surprised by the positive reviews for the Des Moines Symphony. Having lived in places like Washington DC, Boston and Cleveland, we have an appreciation for really fine symphonies. We would not expect that calibre in a small city like Des Moines but we did expect more. We found their music lacked depth, energy and refinement.
haven't been for awhile but surprisingly strong performances when last heard...just need to get back to some classic Beethoven a bit more often for my taste.
I have never been disappointed with the quality and depth of programs put on by the Des Moines Symphony. Maestro Giunta brings top notch guest talent.
