During our visit to Island Park we decided to go check out Big Springs and Johnny Sack's Cabin. It ended up being one of the highlights of our trip. We started by pulling off the main road and into the campground and then walking up the trail to the cabin. It was neat to see the cabin and the attention to detail that Johnny had. The real treat was the area the cabin is located in. It quite beautiful and nice to just be able to hang out a bit. We visited in the off season so there were not a lot of people there so we could take our time checking out the cabin and the water with the large fish.

A wonderful side trip, the docent was very informative, it would be a great place to picnic. It is a wonderful wooded stroll to the cabin, wish you could rent it out

Cool little cabin hand built by a very talented craftsman. Interesting to think about the lifestyle he must have had.

Took my 2 year old twins on a rainy Saturday during Labor Day weekend and we enjoyed it. The cabin is cute and the walk is nice, even in the rain. My kids enjoyed the walk and the cabin. It really is a short excursion, so I would recommend it, even if passing through.

Pretty neat little cabin built in the 1930's. For a free activity this is really neat to see. The Big Springs next to the cabin is also quite fascinating. Great family activity!

The history of this location is very interesting and the location is beautiful and peaceful. You can just imagine what it must have been like for Johnnie Sack living here 100 years ago.

Volunteers man this German-made cabin by it's former inhabitant, Johnny Sack. From the deer-leg curtain rods to the wood barked front kitchen cabinets, this is a must see for it's historic value. And, feeding the huge trout at Big Springs (the beginning of the Snake River) just our the front door is amazing in itself. Do not miss this local attraction when visiting Eastern Idaho or Yellowstone.

This beautiful cabin was built with all of the tender loving care a person could give. Johnny Sack was an immigrant who was a small but mighty visionary and this cabin reflects that in every room and piece of furniture he built.The view her is spectacular so it is easy to see why he built the cabin where he did. You will not only love seeing the cabin and the view, but be on the lookout for Moose who love the water below the cabin.

We thoroughly enjoyed this cabin. As a craftsman himself, my husband was particularly enthralled with everything. From the cabin itself, to all the furnishings, everything was wonderful. The area is gorgeous, and it's no wonder Johnny Sack chose to build here.

German Immigrant Johnny Sacks came to the Island Park area in a blizzard in June of 1909. He built his home by hand at Big Springs. He designed and built his own water wheel system. This man was an engineering and woodworking genius. The home is a short walk from the parking lot beside the Snake River. Last year we saw a MOOSE here! The historic home is staffed by volunteers during the tourist season. Bring some bread and feed the fish in Big Springs - they are BIG too! Big Springs Road is a loop off of Hwy 20, which travels between Island Park Lodge/Robins Roost and the Mack's Inn area. Take the time to see this - it is very worthwhile.

Beautiful, inspiring spot on loop just out of Island Park. An amazingly beautiful house built single handed by a very talented German immigrant in early 1900s in an isolated area. Take time to notice all the details. He was a furniture maker and built everything in this 2 story "cabin" - even the light fixtures, Guide on property to tell the story of Johnny Sack. Lots of area history. Do not miss if in area!
