Description In 1871, in his dugout on the bank of the West Beaver Creek in Smith County, KS, Dr. Brewster Higley VI penned the words to a poem titled "My Western Home". It was later set to music by Dan Kelly and the refrain added by Judge John Harlan; the song "Home on the Range" was born. 785-697-2347. The cabin has been restored and lets one imagine what it would be like to live on the prairie in the 1870s. foot bridges and walking paths have been installed. It's a great place to stop for a picnic, spend the day and enjoy some Kansas history and the outdoors.
