I layed on the beach at Bowers Beach several times this past summer. It is an alternative on the bay to going all the way to Lewes or Rehoboth. It is not the nice sandy beach and you have to share the beach with fishermen but it is an alternative I use because it is only 15 minutes from home. There are no toilet facilities. There is a restaurant open during the summer and there is a place to drop your boat.
I've fished the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays for over 40 years and have never been taken advantage of as I have on this charter. On Saturday, September 6, 2014, 52 of my fellow church-members embarked on a charter fishing trip on the "Captain's Lady" charter boat. After a full day fishing drifting on the Delaware Bay, only four (4) small (bearly legal) fish were caught. The captain did not anchor at all. The trip cost a total of approximately $3,120.00. Of which the captain refused to remit any of the money he was paid and refused to allow any credit for future trips. This was a major "Rip-Off" and very unprofessional on behalf of the boat captain. I am advising any and all to stay away from this charter. If you don't, BEWARE!!
Bowers Beach is a hidden wonderland just about 25 minutes South of Dover. The water is great, not too deep, and very clean. If you like to fish, there is plenty of open space to do it. Their is a Maritime Museum nearby with lots to do. Parking is free and their was plenty of room in the lot when we were there. Good times and good people await you at Bowers Beach.
Water is shallow and safer for families without the huge wave action you'll find in sussex county beaches. Great bar for an afternoon break at the Bayview Inn and a great restaurant with a view in JPs Wharf. Tons to do besides the beach in fishing charters and Bowers Maritime Museum. The beach isn't packed, so you can enjoy yourselves without having to hear other families kids screaming or conversations. Its really just magical.
