We take our dog here every weekend for a walk. He loves it! We love it. There are many trails that weave around this beautiful wooded area that takes you down to an area along the Rehoboth Bay. The trails are well marked and there are even lookout areas to enjoy the scenery and wildlife. We have on occasion to see quite a few deer and bird watching is a must. Living at the beach year round I start to miss the woods and trees. This is a beautiful oasis that's quiet and relaxing. If you go, take your dog. It's fun to meet others walking their four-legged friends. Enjoy!
My wife and I often take our dog for a walk at James Farm and enjoy the walking paths through the woods and around the bay. You're sure to spot wildlife like egrets, herons, or osprey, and the sunset over the bay is beautiful to see.
Located just outside of Bethany Beach, James Farm is a beautiful preserve. There are a few trails that take you to the bay. All are very easy and at most it is a ten minute hike. I always stop though to see what is happening around me. There are numerous birds and a couple of observations towers which allow you to see over the salt marsh. Most of the trail, however is in the woods. Once at the beach, you can go swimming in the bay. It is great for children because it is very shallow and little tide action. It also is dog friendly. The beach itself is not large, but fine for a chair or blanket. Yesterday the tide was the highest I have ever seen it, with a little wave action, but that was most unusual. If you are there in May and June during a full moon, you might see the horseshoe crabs spawning! There are also trails on the other side of the road which wander through the meadows and woods. If you did both sides, it still would only be about 2 miles.
Let's face it, not everyone loves to spend an entire day at the beach sitting in the blazing sun. Our group of seven included two such family members. We (okay, it was me and my husband aka the grandparents) were so happy to find this place. We enjoyed a hike through the pine forest to a great view point overlooking the bay. Temps were cool with a bay breeze and the trail was mostly shady and flat. Boardwalks lead to the bay. * tip - we saw people picnicking at the beach along the bay.
We were vacationing in Bethany Beach and stumbled across the James Farm. We had ordered take out from a local BBQ place and were looking for a place to relax and eat. We drove by the Ocean View park saw the picnic tables and playground. We had relaxing dinner , the kids played in the park and the adults had a chance to stroll around the James Farm Preserve. It was a nice piece of local history with some interesting fact about the chicken industry. I enjoyed our time there and it was a nice break from the crowds at the beach.
This is nothing but a field that was mowed down so the original wildlife, like Meadowlarks, left. Too bad it wasn't left alone rather than be a hangout for dogs to run.
We visit the James Farm Ecological Preserve every year when we visit the Delaware shore. It is a beautiful off the beaten path kind of place, with wonderful, well kept walking trails, and a nice beach on the bay.
