What a very nice small zoo. We stopped by the Zoo in the winter. While not all of the animals are out to view the zoo was really quiet, we were the only people there except employees. The animals the require warmth were the ones not out. In the middle of the winter they do not charge admission. we spent about an hour but we did not have to compete with other people to look at the animals. The tiger and the otters were the highlights for us.
This zoo has it all! Animals large as the tiger, and small as the bees. Great picnic area in the otter circle. Hands on education at stations throughout the zoo from enthusiastic volunteers. And camps during the summer and on school free days. Children love it!It's never crowded, and there is something new to see every time.
Set your expectations, so you won't be disappointed. Not every amusement park is Disneyland. Don't expect every zoo to compare to the Philadelphia ZooBrandywine Zoo is not the Philadelphia Zoo, or the New Jersey Aquarium. It is a small neighborhood zoo. The small size, and its location near a park along a river, reminds me of the Salisbury (MD) Zoo in southern Delmarva. It's sad to see some of the comments here so critical of a small zoo. I've been to many zoos. There is a lot of work and expense with taking care of exotic animals. I wish the Brandywine Zoo well for their efforts to keep Delaware's zoo up and running.I've been following the news on the zoo. In July 2013, a storm destroyed the Exotic Animal House and they have been working to replace that exhibit. They added the two red pandas this summer and also plan some expansion in other areas as well. For a cold winter day, we found many animals alive and well. Check out the photos from my visit to the zoo with my daughters and grand daughter. We enjoyed our day together.
This is a very, very small zoo but was such a great place to visit. They actually have some great animals including a tiger. My favorite is the red panda and they have two new young ones. Staff at the zoo was super friendly. If is free to enter until March 2015.
We drove nearly 2 hours for this trip on a day school was closed, it was mainly to see the red panda. I must say that if had not gone during the discounted ticket period starting in October, I would have been really upset. I took us only 30 minutes to walk through to see the few exhibits that were open. My daughter found the park we had to park at down the street due to road construction more fasinateing than the zoo
My wife and I were planning a weekend trip up to Philadelphia for the weekend. We were going to leave Friday night, but I remembered reading something about a zoo in Wilmington, so I looked it up on the internet and it was pretty convenient from our drive and the hours would work if I just took a 1/2 of vacation and left for Philadelphia Friday afternoon instead of evening. This way we could get out and take our son to the zoo about 1/2 through our trip when he starts getting restless. So it worked out for everyone. So I left work early and got on the road early and arrived at the zoo around 2:15. We parked and got our son out after we had been telling him that we were going to see animals at the zoo the entire way up. We parked (for free thank god!) and walked up to the front entrance only to be greeted by a zoo employee telling us that they were closed at 2 today because of brew in the zoo. I then looked at the zoo entrance and on a single sheet of paper someone had put the information up on a gate. I was so disappointed and mad. I had been to the Zoos website that day and while it did say there was Brew at the Zoo I only discovered afterward that you had to go into the zoo's calendar to see that it was closing early that day. Nothing on the main page at all. Not everyone that goes to a city's zoo is from that city. So now my kid was upset that he was not going to see any animals. Thank god we had parked by a river with ducks in it, because we sat there and fed the ducks and he was happy. Although from seeing the reviews on this website, it may be more fun to feed the ducks than go to this actual "zoo".
I would not consider this a Zoo at all. After being at the Cape May Zoo and Philadelphia Zoo there is no comparison. The website says over 150 animals when in fact there were no more 15 animals which included the reptiles and bee hive. They supposedly have a tiger that was advertised but they told us it was dead. ( which I firmly believe there was never one to begin with) . They do have a very cool looking bird with giant wings that pretends he s a statue probably because he s embarrassed to be there. The best part of the place is probably the gift shop, where you will probably see more animals. My daughter liked the sheep part too where you can feed the sheeps where we spent most of our short time there cause there was nothing else to do. My advice is go to the Philadelphia Zoo instead for the same price and you will actlly see real animals and the tigers there will exist.
Nice small zoo with just enough to entertain a 3 yr old till he got tired, The people in the gift shop were great!
I take my daughter here every so often. It is a small zoo, probably takes about 30-45 minutes to walk through. I recommend it for familes with small children ages 7 and younger. In my opinion, it is the most cost efficient attraction for this age group. My 5 year old loves coming here. This place is very family oriented. There is a small outdoor eatery for snacks like pretzels, hot dogs and drinks. Tickets are cheap and the staff is always friendly and helpful. After we visit the zoo, we usually walk around Brandywine River Park, which I must say, is beautiful in its own right.
It's a small zoo in Delaware, so don't expect too much. The dangerous animals house is currently out of commission, so you won't even get the full show. However, it's a nice excursion for your children if they've never been to a zoo before. There's a full size tiger that will capture their attention, and they can pet some pygmy goats (I think they're goats). For $5 it's an okay value. I wouldn't pay much more. They do have a family night (I think in June) where you can go in the evening for $1, but I missed it this year. If you think you'll have a Philly Zoo experience, you'll be disappointed. However, if you go with reasonable expectations, you and your kids will have an enjoyable time.
This zoo is excellent for young children. Visit the animals in the morning, eat lunch in Otter Circle, then go home and take a nap. The Bird Shows are expanding the appeal of this little zoo. Visitors can receive excellent animal education in a local attraction. Membership benefits include discounts or free admission to other zoos in the country. Also, the gift shop is an affordable place to purchase items for an animal lover and to support a good zoo.
We thought this would be a cute little zoo to occupy some time with a three year old and a seven year old. After paying the entrance fee, we walked in to a very quiet very small zoo with very few animals. There is not much to see, it takes maybe thirty minutes to walk through. Definitely not worth the admission.
I have never been to such a small zoo and we have seen most zoo's in America so I feel we can make an accurate assessment. There are only about 10 animals, if that, and in fact, the day we were there, there clearly appeared to be many more workers/volunteers than animals. The admission cost if $7 which is extremely high compared to larger acre zoos so that makes it around almost a $1 to see each animal. Fortunately, for us we have a Zoo Membership with another zoo and they accepted our other zoo pass for a complimentary admission. They only have a tiger, 2 red panda's, owl, condor, goat, 4 otters, and I can't remember what else. I really can't recommend spending $7 a person for only a maximum of 10 minutes at this very small zoo.
If you are in the area and desperate for something to do with young kids you can go here. It's really small and there's not that much to see and it's pricey for what you get. The park area around it might be nice to picnic/explore but there are safety issues there, apparently.
The Brandywine Zoo is a small zoo but it is really lovely. The area around the zoo has plenty of open space with picnic tables and a beautiful stone wall.Zoo entrance is pretty cheap - $7.00 per adult - and the staff is friendly. Once inside the zoo we saw a number of animals. I was impressed with the cleanliness of the zoo and the activity of the animals. There are places to sit throughout the zoo, along with good bathroom facilities, a few snack shops and a nice gift shop. This was a great way to spend a few hours in the afternoon!
