Snowbasin is conveniently located just 1 hour and 15 minutes north of Park City. While it's not next door, it is close enough to make a trip and completely worth waking up an hour early to make it to the slopes by the time they open. Due to its distance from Park City, it was significantly less crowded. Snowbasin was a beautiful, luxurious and well-maintained ski resort that was equipped with multiple gondolas (which is a huge plus for me because I don't have to worry about falling off the ski lift!!). It reminded me so much of the Sun Valley Ski Resort in Idaho. It had a beautiful lodge at the base with a great mountain shop. The lodges had nice comfortable seating areas and big wonderful fireplaces with exceedingly clean, spacious and fancy restrooms. The restaurants at the top of the gondola were nearly identical, which Sun Valley also had at its resort. It just had the same feel and style. We later learned that the owner of the Sun Valley Resort in Idaho also owns Snowbasin. While I loved all the ski resorts we visited while in Utah, if I had to pick a favorite, Snowbasin was definitely my favorite of the ski resorts we visited while in Utah. I think my husband's favorite was Park City. The lodge at the base of the mountain was beautiful. It had large stone fireplaces, tall windows looking out onto the mountains, and exquisite wood trimmings. The bathrooms were spacious and luxurious. The Needle Lodge (located at the top of the Needle Express Gondola) was beautiful and spacious and the views couldn't be beat. It had large chandeliers that added to the elegance of the lodge, big open windows looking out onto the mountains that wrapped around the entire restaurant, beautiful wooden tables with comfortable chairs, and an impressive stone central fireplace that faced outwards to the room on all four sides. Even the bathrooms were spacious and luxurious, which I know I keep repeating but clean and nice bathrooms is a huge deal to me. Our views while we ate lunch were absolutely breathtaking.I loved the views everywhere, but I really loved the views at the top of the Strawberry Gondola. It was a tad windy, but the views were just amazing. We had such a fabulous time at Snowbasin and hope to come back to explore some more.
We love Snowbasin! Having skied many of the Salt Lake area resorts, they are at the top of our list. No crowds, lower ticket prices (buy online ahead of time), courteous staff, amazing lodges. Would like to see an area for brown baggers at each lodge, we felt somewhat unwelcomed due to signage.
I've been skiing in the Salt Lake City basin for 35 years and never ventured up north until this last week. I went on a tip from the local that snow basin was the best, I was not disappointed I will always return there it was unbelievable.Unbelievable lodges own by Sun Valley resort very high standard.Unbelievable terrain service by to gondolas that take u to on to the topFriendly people great service reasonable prices good foodThe training was steep enough u never had to push to get from point a to bShort drive to get there
It's very clear this mountain was updated for the 2002 Olympics. The lodges are large and modern. There are multiple gondolas, and even a cool mini-gondola to go up to the Olympic Downhill Start Houses. There is plenty of terrain to keep experts busy, and a great beginner area at the base for learning. The one thing to be aware of is that much of the mountain becomes un-skiable if there isn't adequate snow. They do have snow-making which reduces risk, but the steeps require snow-fall that must be near average for the year.
We've came here to ski a few days on our way to ski in Colorado for a week. Nice resort that I did not know about and I have skied a lot of resorts in many states and including BC Canada. This place is a gem that the locals do not want you to know about. They would like to keep it to themselves. The architecture of the lodges is gorgeous with all the wood and stone and they are all fairly new from the looks of it. We ate at several of the restaurants from down in the lodge to up on the hill and the food was all good and plentiful. There are two gondolas to whisk you up on to the mountain and lots of chair lifts. They seem to try and do a good job of grooming the slopes, especially considering that this year there is quite a lack of snow at a lot of ski resorts. They are really doing a great job of making snow and keeping runs covered considering the lack of storms. Of note is that all the employees that I had the opportunity to deal with were very friendly and very helpful.I especially appreciated the fact that you could park up close for a few minutes and completely unload your ski gear into carts to wheel your gear up to the ski area. Then go park your car. This is really handy and something I have not seen at other resorts. All in all I would come back here given the opportunity. I like this place.
I grew up in Ogden and skied Snow Basin in my teens. I was in town last summer visiting family and we went up to the resort. WOW!! It was awesome. We rode the tram to the top. What a view. I would love to go back this winter and ski there. It was used in the Olympics and is definitely a world class venue now. FYI Utah does have the Greatest Snow on Earth.
We skied on a day that I wore only a turtleneck but you can ski two thirds of this mountain without taking a chairlift. There was not any new snow in a week so the ungroomed trails were a little crusty. The groomed trails were very good. With some new snow this place would be great. Good layout and many trails. The lodges make you think you are at a 4 star restaurant. Best bathrooms at any ski resort?
With great powder for the skiers and snowboarders and so many runs/options to choose from Snowbasin has it all! The lodges Earls, Needles and Jon Paul are all great for those who love to enjoy the scenery and watch the ski folk, and their food is great! The Apre ski event at Earls offers great appetizers, mixed drinks and just plain cocoa! The facilities are immaculately maintained and the views from every space are spectacular inside and out. The beautiful Italian chandeliers are a wonder and there is comfy leather seating everywhere! The chili is do die for ( I bribe my hubby to snowshoe by offering a bowl of it after we walk)! Instructors are plentiful, kind and patient and very experienced. All in all Snowbasin has it going on!!!
Snowbasin is ENORMOUS! What a great experience I had here! My husband and I came from Washington and thoroughly enjoyed our day at Snowbasin. The lodges are one thing the resort is known for, being owned by the same people as Sun Valley. I enjoyed a bowl of chili up on the mountain for lunch and have been craving it for about a month since! We skied the whole mountain and came away with a vast appreciation for it. First of all, there is a relatively small area that is beginner terrain - most of the mountain is more intermediate or even advanced, and a lot of it is pretty wild, to be quite honest. I appreciate that, personally, but I'm not sure everyone would. This mountain would be incredible on a powder day - unfortunately we didn't get to experience that.
Where else can you find ski chalets with Italian glass chandeliers and plush leather sofas and chairs? We had runs to ourselves during an off-peak January week. A snow basin guest services employee skied with us the first foggy morning, showing us little known runs and fun routes. Six inches of powder and sunshine greeted us the next day and we explored the whole mountain, with breathtaking views that made us stop in our tracks. Plenty of blue runs, as well as black and double black. Fun to sit in the John Paul chalet and watch daredevils hike to the top of a ridge and carve fresh paths around rocks and trees. Night life is limited to nearby Huntsville and Eden, or Ogden for a slightly longer drive. And then there are those bizarre Utah alcohol laws... But the skiing and scenery are worth it.
Snowboarding was great but the resort was a bit crowded. Prices were lower then on the east coast( our home base). Worth the visit!
Snowbasin is a beautiful, elegant location with breathtaking trails, good food and excellent service… all year round. Snow in the winter, biking/hiking and music all summer.I was told - the owners purposely bought all the surrounding property to prevent development. Consequently, it remains most available to locals and does not have that tourist resort 'feel'. That is the perk that makes a day at Snowbasin delightfully low-key.
Snowbasin besides being the most beautiful resort in Utah and having amazing buildings is also the best kept world secret. Only 40 minutes from Salt Lake City this resort has everything for everyone except lodging. You can ski here anytime and go right onto the lift and ski powder here days after a storm and still get fresh tracks. Since the owners besides owning Snowbasin and Sun Valley, own the Little America hotel in Salt Lake City and also the Grand America in Salt Lake City. Having skied every resort in Utah I will now only ski Snowbasin. It also is a fantastic place to go in the summer for all the activities they have going on as well. Do yourself a huge favor and go here.
If you want to experience real beauty, take the ski lift to the top of the mountain. It is the most wonderful sight you will ever see. Snow Basin is one of the top resorts in the entire USA. Go see it!!!
This mountain is amazing! My only complaint is that there isn't closer accommodations. The lodges are beyond 4 star, the lifts and gondolas are great, the terrain is beyond words. Great ski resort.
