The trail to Rainbow Bridge is beautiful. It's only a mile to the actual bridge an is relatively flat. Some mild hills, but nothing too strenuous unless you go midday when it's unbearably hot. Go first thing in the morning, bring plenty of water, and decent walking shoes. Flip Flops won't cut it, a good pair of water shoes for everyone, kids too.
We came during a drought when the trail from the lake is at its longest. Enter at buoy #49 and you will find a nice dock to tie up to. Avoid flip flops - although I unfortunately proved that you can do it. One thing that was unsettling. You are in a narrow canyon with very tall walls and you can clearly see on the trail where huge rocks have come down. We heard a loud explosion - like dynamite - and part of the upper wall on the opposite bank had fallen down into a plume of smoke. I had my own teenager and I saw many with toddlers coming up the trail. It made me think twice about the risks involved. I will attach a photo of the slide - you will see the arch that was formed on the wall where the slide took place.
The trail to Rainbow Bridge is always in good shape all year long. Need to bring your own water! You will sweat some in the sun while on the relatively gradual inclined trail. Good walking shoes will make the trip easier. Flip flops will make it there, but you will fight them all the way along the path there.
MARAVILLOSO!!!
